Life Goes On

Well, it's been awhile but at least it's still January

The last few weeks have been fairly busy work wise. We had a big slow down where I was working an average of every other day but now I'm back to almost every day. Some times the trips are small, which does not make as much as a longer trip but something is better than nothing.

My sister had a car and a van. She decided that she did not want the car anymore so she has given it to me. I don't actually have the car yet but I do have the signed title. So, I've got the insurance on it now and I just need to get to the tag office for new tags and then I can get someone to take me to get the car so I can put the new tags on it and drive it home. I have not even seen the car yet. LOL It's a 1992 Chevy Lumina LUX and she says it runs perfectly. Yah, I finely will be able to get around.

Yesterday while driving home from Kansas City it started drizzling. Since it was so cold the roads became very icy and slippery. I was on a two lane highway, about 4 car lengths behind a tractor trailer. We were both traveling about 40 miles an hour on a 65 mile an hour road.

Well, the car behind me decided it wanted to go faster. So, he started to pass me. I heard his acceleration and as he was passing I looked over and realized that he was actually starting to slide across the road. I had taken my foot off the gas pedal as he started to pass. He got about even with me and began to slide over to the off road edge of his side of the road (which belonged to the oncoming traffic). In an attempt to keep from sliding off into the ditch he accelerated and turned his wheel back the other way. This then sent him sliding my direction.

Fortunately, I had been able to back off enough where he did not hit me (although barely..I believe a bug could have held on to both bumpers) as he came sliding right in front of me. I knew that if I slammed on the brakes I would go skidding so I just gently placed my foot on the brake and began trying to stop.

In the meantime, he begins doing donuts (spinning) right in front of my van. I'm thinking, O Jesus, help me stop this van without us hitting each other. On coming traffic has stopped as they see this spinning car coming toward them, and here is me still moving forward as he is spinning right in front of me. It was all so surreal. I knew my foot was on the break but I just seemed to be following right along as he kept spinning. Finely, I felt the van stop and I watched as he continued to spin, round and round, finely coming to a stop on the side of the road. He sat there for a moment or so and then took off again.

Thank you Jesus for keeping me safe.

I did not have a crew with me but in a way kinda wished I had....ya know...to tell my boss about my superb driving skills. LOL I also might have had a van full of willing listeners to the gospel. I drove the rest of the way home at a slow pace and watched closely when another vehicle thought I was going to slow and tried to pass. Fortunately, there were no other incidents such as that. Whew!!!

Over night we had a storm come through and when I woke up this morning the ground was all covered with white...but it's not snow...it's ice. I hope it melts some before I have to drive out in it again. Of course the major roads are treated but when you have other drivers doing idiotic things such as the one yesterday it gets extra scary. I alway pray for protection when I go out. That I don't hit anything and nothing hits me and that I stay upright on the road. Those vans tip over easily I've heard.

Freebies that I've gotten recently:

  • 3 bags of Yogi Tea, each a different flavor, along with a 50 cents off coupon.
  • 2 32 page cookbooklets from Gooseberry Patch. 1 is Family Favorite Recipes with Sun Maid Raisins & Dried Fruit. The other is Fall Favorites with Sun Maid Raisins & Dried Fruit.
  • an organic chocolate chip granola bar from Cascadian Farms as well as a $1.00 off coupon.
  • A Retirement For Dummies booklet from Humana
  • A magazine called Kiwi. It's for Growing families the natural and organic way.

I went into WalMart the other night and used the coupons I had for the new Tuna Creations by StarKist. It's packed in pouches and lightly marinated so as to eliminate the need for mayonaise. I found them to be quite tasty, however, I think I could spice the tuna up myself and save the extra money it costs (vs a reg can of tuna). I had 4, $1.00 off coupons and another 1 that was buy one get one free. So, at $1.56 each I bought 4 with the 4 $1 off coupons then a 5th I got for free. Paying only $2.24 for 5 of these tuna pouches. The coupons also had recipe slips attached with ideas for how to make the tuna.

I don't remember if I mentioned it before or not but a few months back I received one of those pre-approved credit card applicaition. I thought, yea, like their going go give me a credit card. Well, upon reading it, it did seem to be personalilzed enough where I thought well, maybe they will. It would not hurt to try. So, I fill the thing out on the internet and lo and behold they tell me I qualified. I'm shocked, but it would be nice to have one "just in case", mostly for if I ever had the need to rent a car since they do not take debit cards...which is what I use to pay for everything.

So anyway, they send me this card and it's a pretty low limit, which is fine 'cause I don't intend to use it. But in the fine print

I see that there is a $39 yearly service fee for having the card. Yikes! Work has just slowed down so even though that is not that big of an amount $39 dollars is $39 dollars. I decide to not activate it.

Well, a couple of weeks go by and someone calls and wants to know why I have not activated the card yet. I explain that right now I cannot add any more new debts so I decided that I did not want the card after all since by my activating it I would be charged the $39 dollars. They tell me, "oh it won't be charged until the first time you use the card". So, a few days later I decide to go ahead and activate it. I call and then go over the activation issue again with the service rep. She tells me the card has already been charged. What? I had not even activated it. Well, instead of having her activate it I had her cancell it. I received a notice a couple of days ago that it's been cancelled and reported to the credit people as paid in full. That has to be a plus for my credit. I know though, that I don't ever again want to get into the mess I was in. The Bible is right when it says that we become a slave to those we owe.

I'm thankful that that was caught before it was too late. I cancelled within the time limit allowed in order to have the fee dropped. Whew again!

Oh well, I think that is it for now.
