Today, I knew the great pleasure of witnessing some small, inadequate, but long awaited restitution for the ravages of slavery's past harshness on the memories and spirits of my black friends. I went to a few of them with words of recognition to mark this day as noted by me and to share in their joy.
To B, I said, "I was fortunate to be raised by a father whose best friend was black, apart from the typical prejudices of the times. I also was in Detroit for the race riots of the 60's as a very young child and very harshly affected by the violence done to "Mr. C's family,"(my Dad's friend's race). Today ! I want to tell you, that though I can't pretend to know your pain, I am so glad to see that one of your sons has risen. (from the ash heap of racism to become President of the United States.) Nothing can make up for the horrible beginnings of this country's days. " And, before I could say more, she embraced me with great joy on her chocolate Christian face.
To another, M, a Christian black man, I said similar words ending in " I am glad to see that men like you can now stand a little taller, today. I'm so glad that this country has come such a long way and this is now possible." He said all the sweetest things, like he always does. " See, that's why you are so cool, like a fan..." " You're like the other side of the pillow." Bless his heart, he AWAYS gives me something back. So much love I have for these two, and their rejoicing was palpable today. As was that of others in our workgroup.
These congratulations were APART from the voting or the politics or any support of any candidate. They were for the spirit of the overcomer that abides in good hearted black people nationwide, who rise above racism to become the loving-hearted people like my friends are. Their burden has been long-suffered and enormous over generations of abuse in many forms.
Thank You, Jesus, for their joy. amen.
