Deut 17:14-20
Todays portion is regarding the choosing of a king. As long as the people followed Adonai's instructions, everything ran smoothly, they did not need a king. God did not want them to have a king, However, as people do, they would start to look at all the other nations and see that they had kings, so Israel would decide they wanted one too. So Adonai was a step ahead of them. He taught them that when this happened, how to choose a king.
Of the many things God said were the qualifications God said that the new king must write a copy of the Law for himself and keep it in a book. The king was required to keep that book with him at all times and read it everyday for his entire life. Why? Because he must learn to respect the Lord his God. He must learn to obey everything the Lord commanded. In this the king would understand that he was no better than anyone else in his kingdom. He would have humility.
God's instructions are important. The disciples when writing to the early Christians quoted the law continuously in their letters. I was surprised how often they quoted the scriptues (Old Testiment) to prove their points regarding Yeshua, and his death and resurrection for their salvation. Peter used Torah to teach at Cornelius house, James used Torah when he explained to the eunich, the Bereans used it to verify whether what Paul and Silas were telling them was truth or not. Yeshua told Nicodemus that as a teacher of the law he should understand what "born again" meant. When the two disciples on the road to Emaus met Yeshua but did not recognize him, Yeshua taught them from the OT scriptures.
Then we have Lke 16:19-31, the rich man's conversation with Abraham in sheol. The man wanted Lazarus to return from the dead and warn his 5 brothers about hell. Abraham's response was "If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead." (vs 31).
With all of that, I'd say the Tanakh (all the Old Testiment) is pretty important. God said it would keep the king humble (not proud or arrogant) and we certainly need that in this day and age.
