As a teenager, I started watching anime online in English subtitles. Usually, the fansubs anime would have notes that tells you the translation of the Japanese words. In anime OPs and EDs the songs is sung in Japanese. When the lyrics repeats the same word we assume how to say that word in English. But, learning Japanese by simply watching Japanese is not enough to learn Japanese and to speak in fluently because we depending on the anime to learn Japanese.
The better way to learn Japanese and be in fluently is to learn Japanese in college or played the game "My Japanese Coach" on the Nintendo DS. I had played My Japanese Coach and was able to learn new words faster and also learn some Japanese characters.
As a benefit, it became easier for me to read the Hiragana and Katakana alphabets sung in anime OPs and EDs.
