Deut 16:18-17:1
The first part of todays portion is how to choose judges and officers to rule over the people. They were told to choose fair men. These men were to not play favorites or take bribes to rule in favor of one party over another. In their attempt to be good and fair at all times, they would live and keep the land the Lord had given them.
Not all of us will be judges in a court system, but the point of what God is looking for in us, no matter what position we are in is someone who is fair to others. Are you fair in your dealings with others? Do you play favorites due to one of the people being your best friend, or your brother/sister. Do you accept bribes to deal more favorably with one person and not the other? You cannot change what someone else does but you can change what you do. If you can't be fair in a situation, you need to walk away and allow someone else to take care of it. Strive always to be fair and good.
Rom 12:21 Don’t let evil defeat you, but defeat evil by doing good.
