For Many Are Called, But Few Are Chosen

“The first man Adam became a living being;” the last Adam a life-giving spirit. The spiritual, however, was not first, but the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. As was the earthly man, so also are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so also shall we bear the likeness of the heavenly man” (1 Corinthians 15:45-49). Paul was writing this letter to believers in Christ and not to everyone in the world (to include unbelievers). Therefore, those who have been spiritually reborn through the Gospel of Jesus Christ experience a spiritual rebirth because of the last Adam, Jesus the Christ. This transformation happens only once one receives, believes in, and fully surrenders to this gospel. Additionally, once spiritually reborn, the believer cannot go back under the law as they are now under a new covenant with God through Jesus.

Furthermore, the scriptures tell us that the number of those who will accept the Gospel and are spiritually reborn are few. Especially when compared to the number of people who reject the Gospel. Every soul who hears the Gospel must make the choice to repent from our lives in this world or to reject this gift from God and in the end perish. Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14). There are far too many false doctrines produced by the adversary teaching that many (and sometimes all) are saved without true repentance. However, if that were true, Jesus would not have rejected these false teachings. Jesus taught us that many will be called through the gospel message, and yet only the few will answer this call (these are the chosen Jesus spoke about).

“Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to call those he had invited to the banquet, but they refused to come. Again, he sent other servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’ But they paid no attention and went away, one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged, and he sent his troops to destroy those murderers and burn their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the crossroads and invite to the banquet as many as you can find.’ So the servants went out into the streets and gathered everyone they could find, both evil and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to see the guests, he spotted a man who was not dressed in wedding clothes. ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But the man was speechless. Then the king told the servants, ‘Tie him hand and foot and throw him outside into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:1-14).
