The Apostle John wrote, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you will know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and which is already in the world at this time. You, little children, are from God and have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. They are of the world. That is why they speak from the world’s perspective, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. That is how we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deception.” (1 John 4:1-6)
The devil is a liar specializing in half-truths and deception. He is having his way with today’s Christianity, just as he did with the religious Jews who confronted Jesus. Many who claim to be following Jesus today are duped into believing (and even teaching) the devils half-truth doctrines loaded with omissions of the true teachings of Jesus, thus teaching another gospel. Paul wrote, “I am amazed how quickly you are deserting the One who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is not even a gospel. Evidently some people are troubling you and trying to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a curse! As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be under a curse!” (Galatians 1:6-9)
Jesus taught against the practice of teaching anything other than His truth and why those with dull ears cannot hear His voice. “Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:43-44) We must never forget or underestimate the craftiness of the adversary, the devil. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12) The Apostle Paul wrote, “But I will keep on doing what I am doing, in order to undercut those who want an opportunity to be regarded as our equals in the things of which they boast. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions.” (2 Corinthians 11:12-15)
Demons often fool people because they seem “familiar”, therefore they must be good. These familiar spirits are demonic spirits that intimate and feel comfortable to a person. Often people will get involved with the thoughts of these familiar spirits. The spirit, familiar with the person’s thinking patterns, can quietly lead them onto the broad path that leads to destruction mentioned by Jesus. This is where “the many” will follow because it feels right to them. However, we can, by faith, turn to the Lord for all truth! “But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:16-18)
