It had a really cool insight about this while it bes talking and prayings with danstar on IM
wave: hi Dan) today. It bes thinksy of the verse from the scripture last night to FLEE fornication (because Dan mentioned that -- he said FLEE when They starts taking it sexually while we bes talking.) Suddenly it all seemed so very clear. This bes a directive in scripture, an active thing, an active instruction: FLEE fornication. (1 Corinthians 6:18)
Contrast this with the other "flee" in scripture:James 4:7-8(a). So normally it says resist the devil and HE will do the fleeing. Why, then, does fornication have a different instruction for dealing with it? Scripture does not say RESIST fornication. No. It says FLEE it. Why? Perhaps because we cannot fight it. Perhaps because we literally cannot resist it, and God knows this, and so He gives a DIFFERENT kind of instruction for us to "possess [our] vessel in sanctification and honor."
Remember Joseph in the court of Potiphar being seduced by Potiphar's wife? She bes not takesy NO for an answer and he literally fled, leaving his garment in her hands. Genesis 39:11-12. (Every directive in scripture has a rich heritage in the stories of the OT in case you bes not notice ...) Joseph "FLEED" from fornication. He FLED.
So for all other temptations we RESIST ... but the ones that bes sexual in nature we must FLEE.
Moriah has a theory as to why. Cannot prove this from scripture, it just bes its reasoning.
See, every other sin impulse bes an intruder. God did not create us to lie, cheat, steal, dishonor one another, defraud one another, assail and injure one another, murder, covet, envy, hoard, be greedy or any of the rest of that. It has literally no place in us by God's reckoning.
However, the sexual impulse God DID put inside us. Unlike other sinful impulses, we cannot be rid of sexual desire without losing a vital part of the life God intends us to have. It bes a gift from Him, one of life's vital joys. (That bes why Satan works so hard to claimstake it for himself.) We have no need for anger or hate or murder or theft. We can shove those out of ourselves and live just fine -- even better -- without them. But not so with our sexuality. We cannot get rid of our sexuality; we can only consecrate it to God and ask His blessing and purifying on it. And therefore, for that reason -- because we cannot get rid of sexual desires -- we cannot RESIST fornication, so we must FLEE FROM IT instead.
Contrast this with the other "flee" in scripture:
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
