Those who are chosen - are chosen from the world. Not because they did anything special or because they are better than anyone else. They are chosen simply because of God's providence.
John 15:18-19
"If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you."
Jesus makes it clear that though we are not of the world - that he chose us out of the world (see bolded text). To be chosen out of the world indicates that before we are saved we are of the world. As is pointed out in John 3:16 the world is in need of a savior and that all people will perish without one. That includes the elect.
My point - that the elect are guilty of sin and hatred toward God and in need of a savior. It isn't the election that saves them - but the death of Jesus on the cross for their sin that saves them.
