Each At Our Own Level.

The Jewish people have a prayer for everything...literally, everything. The prayer for studying Torah (God's Word) is:

  • Blessed art thou, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who sanctifies us with Thy commandments and commanded us to engross ourselves in the words of the Torah.
The words "engross ourselves in the Torah" in Hebrew is la'asok b'divrei. It means to engage or immerse oneself and it comes from the Hebrew root which means "busy". So basically we are being told to busy ourselves with the study of Torah, paying attention to God's instructions for our life.

It has been questioned why the word la'asok b'diirei was used instead of "lomed", which means to learn and study. The reason is a difference in the action involved.

  • Not every person has the ability or time to learn or study on the level that is required by the verb lomed. However, every person can attend to, engage in, occupy oneself with, be immersed in, be busy with, and practice Torah according to one's ability, time, and need to cling to the word of God. ~Annette and Eugene Labovitz, Time For My Soul~
In Ex. 16 we see God supplying the needs of the people via quail which brought manna to the people. The people were instructed to gather it up in the morning and to gather only what they needed. Each person was allotted a certain amount. Each family had to gather for themselves and their family and not for other families.

They were given details of all to do except they were not given a way to fix it. No recipes. They could cook it, boil it, or however they wanted to fix it was their choice. I'm thinking that their finished dish for each family tasted the way that family desired it to taste. (See Num 11:7-9)

God's word has many branches extending in many directions. It is studied by individuals from all walks of life and from the aged to children. Each person finds in the study of God's word what they need and according to their level of understanding.

Of course, this does not mean that one can imagine that God says something He does not. God is quite clear in His word and while we should have helps from other studies, we should never just believe whatever another person has concluded on the matter, they may be wrong. It's important to do our own gathering.

It's comforting though, for me anyway, to know that God is meeting me where I am and not standing over me like a drill sergeant barking orders expecting me to be at the level of someone else. We shouldn't be doing that to each other either.
