The group from Ariya went far while the gibbous moon was shining above the horizon, and they saw the land beyond this dry waste seem closer as they continued. But at length it set, before the country ahead was very close, and there was no other stone like what had been of good use to them earlier anywhere near to them, just very distant ones no closer to where they were trying to reach soon. So they went on, while it was darker, but still there were all the stars shining above.
They could not be sure where the dry waste would come to an end, so they went on still trying to go in just the same direction, not quite as fast still. This went on for a while, and none were speaking to each other, with most attentive to whatever might be seen ahead. But after more time this way, the eastern sky began to slowly brighten, before the coming dawn.
Soon the country beyond the wide area of dry waste was seen. They had all slanted a little way from reaching it directly. It was well in view soon, but it would take a few hours more to reach that. And all in the group were tired from all their walking, and none were walking fast anymore.
