WARNING - SMALL SPOILER AT END OF THE REVIEW - READ ON WITH CAUTION
Five out Five STARS!
I slid out of work early yesterday to go see Batman The Dark Knight - a movie that I had quite frankly been waiting a year to see now. I wasn't Disappointed!
The movie is action packed - and packed with good acting as well. It's been a long time since a memorable villain has come onto the movie scene - and I must say that Heath Ledger put together a villian masterpiece in his portrayel of Batman's arch nemesis The Joker.
The movie is packed with a lot of twists and turns - though big time comic book fans (of which I am) will pick up on a big one very early in the movie. Those of us who have been reading comics for a long time know all about Harvey Dent - but that's all I'm gonna say about him here. See the movie and you'll figure out what I'm getting at.
I don't know if other comic fans do this or not but I have had a habit of always comparing Marvel's Tony Stark (Iron Man) with DC's Bruce Wayne (Batman). Both characters are multi-billionares with no super hero powers but have created their alter ego heros out of gadgets and high tech costumes, machines, etc.
There is a scene at the end of the movie (HERE COMES THE SPOILER) in which Batman and commisioner Gordon come up with a secret plan to set up Batman as a murderor (which he didn't do) so that the public will retain trust of the municipal authorities such as the DA, the mayor, the police etc.
Tony Stark would never pull such a stunt and at the scene in the movie I decided then and there that I like him better as a character. Anytime you have the government engaging in cover-ups (even if Batman is involved and approves) I think its just a bad precedent. Stark makes no bones about his identity as Iron Man and keeps everything out in the open. I like that - and it speaks of an honesty and openess that trumps Batman's Bruce Wayne ten-fold.
Iron Man was also a great movie - 5 out of 5 for that one too. I'm not sure which I liked better. Probably Batman - just because the Joker scared the fire out of me - and a fictitous villian hasn't done that in quite a long time.
