God is formally named in scripture in many places as “YWVH”
Although Hebrew does not contain the letter “J”, this is commonly rendered as “Jehovah” or “Yahweh”.
God’s name was held so sacred, the Jews did not include vowels to represent His full name.
The Name of God
In Hebrew, and many other cultures,
a name is very significant. It is said to reveal the attributes of the holder.
“And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by My name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.”
Ex 6:3
God's Name
To carelessly speak His name without reverentially calling upon Him, or giving Him glory is a serious offense in the eyes of God.
“Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.”
Deut 5:11
In Many Passages of Scripture, One of
God’s Attributes Accompanies His Name
In His days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is His name whereby He shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
Jer 23:6
The Lord Our Righteousness = Jehovah Tsidkenu
Even more serious in the sight of God than His name is His Word
“I will worship toward Thy holy temple, and praise Thy name for Thy lovingkindness and for Thy truth: for Thou hast magnified Thy Word above all Thy name.”
Psalms 138:2
God's Living Word
God’s Word is powerful and alive (Heb 4:12)
He hastens over it to perform it (Jer 1:12)
His Word is a sure foundation (Luke 6:48)
It is a discerner of the intents of the heart (Heb 4:12)
It’s truth endures forever (1 Peter 1:25)
It is a recipe for success (Josh 1:8)
It upholds all things (Heb 1:3)
