What does the tiger know about the world? Nothing. The tiger doesn’t care about the highs and lows of the stock market. The tiger has no health insurance. The tiger is unaware of gossip, slander, and all types of bad information. With absolutely no formal training, the tiger is able to find shelter, food, and water. That’s all the tiger needs. That’s the way God made the tiger. The tiger is following God’s direction undistracted by the world.
Humans are wild animals like the tiger in many ways. We have those same instincts to seek food, water, and shelter; but unlike wild animals, we have complex minds that are easily distracted by the world around us. Our mission is to make a choice between the ways of the world and the ways of God. When we decide to follow Jesus, we push this world aside and begin to operate on instincts like the tiger.
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Galatians 2:20 (NIV)
Our goal should be to operate like a wild animal in the sense that we are completely undistracted by the world and totally focused on God’s direction. Of course, this is not as easy for us as it is for the tiger. The tiger completely avoids the city and all things created by man. I don’t think we need to move to the jungle to separate ourselves from the world. I think God has given believers the unique ability to live in the world but not be a part of the world.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 (NIV)
“Transformed by the renewing of your mind,” Every day is an opportunity to perfect that transformation and make a spiritual connection to God that will guide you through the jungle of this world. Like wild animals, believers should be operating completely on God’s direction totally undistracted by this world.
