Notes: Isaiah 8:1 To Isaiah 17:9

*Isaiah 8:1 / *Isa. 8:1 -

(Maher-shalal-hash-baz)

This name (Isaiah 8:3) is made up of four Hebrew words: The first word (maher: H4118) can mean "speed" (Psalms 69:17). The second word (shalal: H7998) can mean "the spoil" (Exodus 15:9). The third word (chuwsh: H2363), transliterated here as "hash", can mean "make haste" (Deuteronomy 32:35). And the fourth word (baz: H0957) can mean "the prey" (Numbers 31:32).

So "Maher-shalal-hash-baz" can mean: "Speed to the spoil, make haste to the prey". This is a reference to how a king of Assyria would plunder the northern kingdom of Israel (Samaria) and Syria (Damascus) (Isaiah 8:4) in the latter part of the eighth century BC.

--

*Isaiah 8:4-8 / *Isa. 8:4 -

In Isaiah 8:4, "the king of Assyria" refers to Sargon II, who defeated Samaria in 722 BC.

Isaiah 8:7-8 could refer to Sennacherib, who succeeded Sargon II.

--

*Isaiah 8:6 / *Isa. 8:6 -

"Shiloah" (H7975) could refer to the fountain in Jerusalem which feeds the pool of "Siloam" (of John 9:7). For "Siloam" (G4611) is derived from "Shiloah".

--

*Isaiah 8:21 / *Isa. 8:21 -

The original Hebrew word (qashah: H7185) translated as "hardly bestead" can mean "hardened" in the sense of having a hardened heart against God (Job 9:4b, Psalms 95:8). It can also refer to experiencing something "hard" in the sense of difficult (Genesis 35:16).

--

*Isaiah 9:6 / *Isa. 9:6 -

Jesus Christ will be called the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) when He physically returns and sits on David's throne, and rules the earth (Isaiah 9:7) with a rod of iron (Psalms 2), forcing all nations to destroy their weapons of war and not to teach or practice war (Micah 4:3).

--

*Isaiah 9:14 / *Isa. 9:14 -

This, in its context (Isaiah 9:9-14), could refer to the fall of ancient Samaria and the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 BC.

--

*Isaiah 10:5-34 / *Isa. 10:5 / *Isa. 10:17 -

This could have been fulfilled during the Assyrian king Sennacherib's invasion in Isaiah chapters 36-37.

--

*Isaiah 10:9-11 / *Isa. 10:9 -

This could have been fulfilled in Isaiah 36:19-20 and 2 Kings 18:34-35.

--

*Isaiah 10:12,20,21 / *Isa. 10:12 -

This could have been fulfilled in Isaiah 37:31-38.

--

*Isaiah 10:13 / *Isa. 10:13 -

The original Hebrew word (gebuwlah: H1367) translated as "bounds" can mean "borders" (Psalms 74:17).

--

*Isaiah 10:19 / *Isa. 10:19 -

This referred to the few soldiers of ancient Assyria who were left alive after 2 Kings 19:35. For the context of Isaiah 10:19 is God's judgment against Sennacherib, a king of ancient Assyria, for threatening Jerusalem in the time of Hezekiah, king of Judah (Isaiah 10:5-19; 2 Kings 19:20-37). Similarly, Isaiah 10:20 refers to a remnant of Jews living in Jerusalem who survived Sennacherib's invasion of Judah (2 Kings 19:30-37).

--

*Isaiah 10:22 / *Isa. 10:22 -

(As the sand of the sea)

See Genesis 24:60 above.

--

*Isaiah 10:28-32 / *Isa. 10:28 -

There is no historical proof (as is sometimes claimed) that Sennacherib, a king of ancient Assyria, did not fulfill Isaiah 10:28-32. For his main army could have gone down the coast of Israel while he led an expeditionary force rapidly down the ridge of Israel in Isaiah 10:28-32 (leaving no archaeological markers) to do a quick reconnaissance of walled Jerusalem, to check out the approaches to it and get a sense of the best way to lay siege to it. Then he could have shaken his fist at Jerusalem (Isaiah 10:32) and rejoined his main army along the coast.

Later, while laying siege to Lachish (an ancient walled city about 30 miles/50 kilometers southwest of Jerusalem), and thinking about what he had seen for himself to be Jerusalem's formidable defensive position, Sennacherib could have begun to worry how long it would take to conquer Jerusalem by siege. So when King Hezekiah showed signs of submission to Sennacherib (2 Kings 18:14-16), Sennacherib could have thought that if he just sent a large force back to Jerusalem, he could scare it into surrender with mere words (2 Kings 18:17-37).

Note the similarity of Sennacherib's boasting in 2 Kings 18:34-35 and Isaiah 36:19-20 to that prophesied in Isaiah 10:9-11.

(See also 2 Kings 18:5 and 2 Chronicles 30:12 above)

--

*Isaiah 11:1-3 / *Isa. 11:1 -

This is a different time frame than Isaiah 11:4-16. Isaiah 11:1-3 refers to Jesus Christ's first coming, whereas Isaiah 11:4-16 refers to His future, Second Coming and the subsequent Millennium (Revelation 19:7 to 20:6, Zechariah 14:3-21).

--

*Isaiah 11:2 / *Isa. 11:2 -

(Re: Seven Spirits)

See Revelation 4:5 below.

--

*Isaiah 11:4b / *Isa. 11:4b -

This parallels 2 Thessalonians 2:8, which refers to the future, individual man commonly called the Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:3-9). The apostle Paul could even be thinking of "the breath of his [Jesus'] lips" in Isaiah 11:4b when he refers to "the spirit of his [Jesus'] mouth" in 2 Thessalonians 2:8. For in 2 Thessalonians 2:8 the original Greek word (pneuma: G4151) translated as "spirit" can refer to "breath" (Strong's Greek Dictionary). And "lips" can serve as a synonym for "mouth". Compare, for example, the English phrase: "Loose lips sink ships", as in: "Shut your mouth".

--

*Isaiah 11:6-16 / *Isa. 11:6 -

(Re: Means that animals and humans will be spirit instead of flesh?)

No, Isaiah 11:6-8 only requires that all animals will have become peaceful herbivores (Isaiah 11:7b), just as all animals and humans were both flesh and vegetarians in the Garden of Eden before the fall of Adam and Eve into sin (Genesis 2:19), and at the earlier time of Genesis 1:30.

~

(Re: Already fulfilled per Romans 15:12?)

No, see Romans 15:12 below.

~

(Re: Isn't Gentile salvation not before Isaiah 11:10-16?)

Note that there is no "not before" in Isaiah 11:10-16, which refers to the future time of the Millennium, after Jesus Christ's future, Second Coming (Revelation 19:7 to 20:6, Zechariah 14:3-21). For Jesus' first coming was shown in Isaiah 11:1-3.

Even though the Millennial time frame of Isaiah 11:10-16 is still in our future, the general principle in Isaiah 11:10, the salvation of Gentiles, is already in effect and has been since at least Acts 6:1.

~

(Re: There is no reference to "the Millennium")

Note that Isaiah 11:6-16, which has never been fulfilled, does not have to use the words "the Millennium" to be referring to what is commonly called the Millennium (of Revelation 20:4-6), just as, for example, Matthew 28:19 does not have to use the words "the Trinity" to be referring to what is commonly called the Trinity.

~

(Literal animals)

Just as the child, straw, hole, hand, and den in Isaiah 11:6-8 are literal, so the animals in Isaiah 11:6-8 are literal.

~

(Re: Isn't there no internal proof in Isaiah 11 that it refers to the Millennium, or that the animals are literal?)

Just as preterism cannot give any internal proof, but must employ external verses (e.g. Acts 10:12) to claim (mistakenly) that the animals in Isaiah 11:6-8 must be symbolic, so Christian Futurism can employ external verses (e.g. Romans 8:19-25) to show (correctly) that the animals in Isaiah 11:6-8 are literal. And their being literal requires that Isaiah 11:6-16 will not happen until the future Millennium.

(See also Romans 15:12 below)

~

(Re: Animals became tainted by sin?)

Both man and animals became subject to suffering (Romans 8:22) because of man's sin (Romans 5:12a, Romans 8:20a).

~

(Re: The whole planet became tainted by sin?)

All of the earthly creation has been affected for the worse (Romans 8:22).

~

(Re: Is not this Gnosticism, the idea that the physical realm is evil in itself?)

No, for it has not been said that the physical realm is evil in itself.

(See Luke 24:39 below)

~

(Re: At Jesus' Second Coming, all animals will be "fixed"?)

All animals "shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption" (Romans 8:21) when the Church is physically resurrected (if dead) or changed (if alive) into incorruption (Romans 8:19-25; 1 Corinthians 15:51-53) at Jesus Christ's future, Second Coming (1 Corinthians 15:21-23,51-53; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17, Revelation 19:7 to 20:6).

~

(Re: Are not there clean and unclean animals in Isaiah 11:6-9?)

The division of animals into clean and unclean was only an Old Testament concept, which was not carried over into the New Testament/New Covenant, under which all animals are clean, and can be eaten (Romans 14:14).

(See Romans 14:14 below)

~

(Re: Are not you being inconsistent, employing two different *hermeneutic standards?)

No, for note that it is consistent to have a single hermeneutic standard under which some Bible verses (or parts of verses) are literal and others are symbolic, depending on their immediate context, on any subsequent explanations (e.g. Acts 10:34-35 and Acts 11:2-18 explain Acts 10:11-15), and on comparing the verses with other, related verses elsewhere in the Bible (Isaiah 28:9-10; 1 Corinthians 2:13); for example, comparing Isaiah 11:6-9 and Romans 8:19-25.

Hopefully, full preterism does not claim that all Bible verses are symbolic, but can admit that some are symbolic and others are literal. For example, (hopefully) full preterism does not claim that the "beasts" in Genesis 36:6 were symbolic of Jews and Gentiles, instead of being literal animals, simply because the "beasts" in Acts 10:12 were symbolic. And if full preterism can admit that the "beasts" in Genesis 36:6 were literal, then it should be able to admit that the animals in Isaiah 11:6-9 can be literal.

(See also Revelation 5:6 below)

~

(Re: Means that humans will be vegetarian during the Millennium?)

Isaiah 11:6-9 can refer only to animals no longer killing or hurting each other or humans. For during the Millennium, humans will still eat meat (e.g. Isaiah 25:6).

(See the "vegetarian?" section of 1 Timothy 4:1 below)

*Isaiah 11:8 / *Isa. 11:8 -

(Cockatrice / H6848)

See Jeremiah 8:17 below.

--

*Isaiah 11:10-16 / *Isa. 11:10 / *Isa. 11:11 -

This can refer to Jesus Christ's future, Second Coming, and the subsequent Millennium.

~

The original Hebrew word (nec: H5251) translated as "ensign" can mean "sign". Compare Numbers 26:10, where some men who died a miraculous death became a "sign" (H5251) not to rebel against God. In the case of Isaiah 11:10 the sign is the person of Jesus Christ Himself, who is the root of Jesse and so the root of David (Revelation 22:16, Ruth 4:22b). At Jesus' future, Second Coming, He will serve as a physical sign of salvation for the nations (Isaiah 66:18-21, Micah 4:1-4), just He has always been the only way to salvation from hell (John 14:6, John 3:36, Acts 4:12), proven by His miraculous, physical resurrection from the dead (Romans 1:4-6). And Isaiah 11:10 is one of the verses which the apostle Paul quotes in his proof that God always intended to save Gentiles as well as Jews (Romans 15:12, cf. Romans 9:24, Romans 3:29).

--

*Isaiah 12:6 / *Isa. 12:6 -

This, like the rest of the chapter, can refer to the future Millennium.

--

*Isaiah 13 / *Isa. 13 / *Isa. 13:10 -

To properly understand the timing of Isaiah 13:10, it should be read in its context (Isaiah 13:1-22).

The city of Babylon referred to in Isaiah 13 (verses 1,19) is not the ancient city of Babylon, just as it is not the symbolic (and worldwide) "Babylon" of Revelation chapters 17-18. Instead, it is only the present-day, literal city of Babylon (in Iraq), which the Antichrist (the individual-man aspect of Revelation's "beast") will transform into his world capital during the future Tribulation of Revelation chapters 6 to 18 and Matthew 24.

(See Revelation 13:1 below)

In Isaiah 13:3 the "sanctified ones" who "rejoice in [YHWH's] highness" are the obedient people in the Church in Revelation 19:7-8, after the future Tribulation of Revelation chapters 6 to 18 and Matthew 24. They will be, in Isaiah 13:4-5, the "host of the battle" from "heaven" when they physically descend from the sky (the first heaven) with Jesus Christ as He alone wages war against the world's armies at His physical return from heaven (Revelation 19:14-21). So in Isaiah 13:6,9 the "day of the Lord" is the same as the future, Second-Coming Day of the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:7-8; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10).

Isaiah 13:10,13 refers to the same, future, Second-Coming time as Matthew 24:29-31 and Revelation 19:15.

Isaiah 13:11 refers to Jesus Christ's defeat of the world's armies at His Second Coming (Revelation 19:19-21, Zechariah 14:3-21).

Isaiah 13:16 refers not to what Jesus or the Church will do, but to what some unsaved "Medes" (Isaiah 13:17-18) will do to the inhabitants of the city of Babylon at the time of Jesus Christ's future, Second Coming. By "Medes" is meant the native inhabitants of that part of the Middle East which in ancient times was called "Media", and is now in northwestern Iran. The Kurds who now live there, and in surrounding areas, claim to be the descendants of the ancient Medes.

In Isaiah 13:17 the "Medes" are not the ancient Medes who conquered the ancient city of Babylon (Daniel 5:28,31). For the ancient Medes did not make the ancient city of Babylon uninhabited (Isaiah 13:19-22) when they defeated it, but instead kept it as a thriving city which continued on for centuries.

In Isaiah 13:19-22 the total and eternal destruction of the city of Babylon (in Iraq) has never been fulfilled. For Saddam Hussein rebuilt the city of Babylon (using bricks he inscribed with "built by Saddam Hussein, son of Nebuchadnezzar"). And after his defeat, U.S. forces built a military base in Babylon. And in the future, the Antichrist will transform the city of Babylon into his world capital. Isaiah 13:19-22 will not be fulfilled until this city is destroyed at Jesus Christ's future, Second Coming.

*Isaiah 13:2 / *Isa. 13:2 -

The original Hebrew word (nuwph: H5130) translated as "shake" the hand can mean to "wave" the hand in a beckoning manner, in this case waving people into the gates.

--

*Isaiah 13:13-14 / *Isa. 13:13 -

(Re: The "rogue planet" idea under Genesis 1(space) above)

Isaiah 13:13-14 could refer to the earth becoming a rogue planet again (temporarily) in our future. For God's shaking of the heavens so that the earth will be "removed out of her place" could refer to the earth being removed out of its orbit around the sun. And the earth being "as the chased roe" could refer to the earth careering off on its own path into interstellar space. And the earth being "as a sheep that no man taketh up" could refer to the earth (temporarily) not being taken back into orbit around the sun, or any other star.

But to prevent the extinction of all life on the earth due to freezing (cf. Mark 13:20), the situation of the earth being a rogue planet could transpire for only a few days, before Jesus Christ (at His Second Coming) miraculously restores the earth to its former (or to an even better) orbit around the sun.

--

*Isaiah 13:21 / *Isa. 13:21 -

The original Hebrew word (sa`iyr: H8163) translated as "satyrs" can mean the "kids" of goats (Leviticus 16:5). Regarding them "dancing" (raqad: H7540), compare the "skipping" (raqad: H7540) of lambs (Psalms 114:4).

--

*Isaiah 14:12-14 / *Isa. 14:12 -

This could refer to Lucifer's original fall into rebellion, by desiring to abandon an earthly assignment in Eden watching over Adam (Ezekiel 28:13-15), and vowing to ascend back into heaven and to rule over the angels there, and to sit along with God in an exalted position in heaven, regardless of what God wanted.

~

(Re: Is a correlation between *Lucifer the morning star and Christ the *morning star merely a result of the translation into English?)

No, it is also a result of the meaning of the original Hebrew and Greek words involved. For in Isaiah 14:12 the original Hebrew word (heylel: H1966) translated as "Lucifer" in the KJV and as "morning star" in the NIV means "the morning star" (Strong's Hebrew Dictionary). The KJV translates it as "Lucifer" because in English, "Lucifer" in its etymology means "the morning star" (Webster's English Dictionary). And in Revelation 22:16 the original Greek word (proinos: G4407) translated as "morning" means "pertaining to the dawn" (Strong's Greek Dictionary). And the original Greek word (aster: G0792) translated as "star" means "a star" (Strong's Greek Dictionary).

So the future Antichrist (the individual-man aspect of Revelation's "beast"), who will bring the world into the conscious and open worship of Lucifer (Satan, the dragon) (Revelation 13:4, Revelation 12:9), could falsely claim that Lucifer is Christ. For "Lucifer" (Isaiah 14:12, KJV) means "the morning star" and Christ is the morning star (Revelation 22:16). But the Antichrist will not say that Lucifer is Jesus. For the Antichrist will deny that Jesus is the Christ (1 John 2:22).

The truth is that Jesus is the Christ (John 20:31) and Lucifer fell from his office of morning star (Isaiah 14:12) and became Satan (cf. Luke 10:18). Jesus Christ has taken over the office of morning star (Revelation 22:16). This is not to say that the office of Christ and the office of morning star are one and the same. It simply means that Jesus can hold both offices at the same time.

(See also Revelation 13:4 below, and section 2 of Revelation 13 below)

--

*Isaiah 14:15 / *Isa. 14:15 -

This could refer to Satan's future imprisonment in the Bottomless Pit (Revelation 20:1-3) at Jesus Christ's Second Coming (Revelation 19:7 to 20:3).

(See also Job 33:22 above)

--

*Isaiah 14:19 / *Isa. 14:19 -

(Re: Refers to the future Antichrist as being a false Jewish Messiah/Branch?)

No, for note that someone does not have to be a false Messiah, or even a Jew, to be referred to figuratively as a branch. For example, John 15:2-6 and Romans 11:24 include all Gentile Christians as distinct branches.

(See also the "Not Christ" and "Not Jew" sections of Revelation 13:4 below)

--

*Isaiah 14:20 / *Isa. 14:20 -

Nothing requires (as is sometimes claimed) that this is addressing the future Antichrist instead of Lucifer (Isaiah 14:12-20). Also, the land and people in Isaiah 14:20 are not the land of Israel and the Jews. For Isaiah 14:20 is not addressing a king of Israel, but a king of Babylon (Isaiah 14:4) who will destroy the world (Isaiah 14:17). And Lucifer/Satan would be the spiritual king of the figurative Babylon which encompasses the world (Revelation chapters 17-18).

(See Revelation chapters 17-18 below)

--

*Isaiah 14:25 / *Isa. 14:25 -

Here the Assyrian could be the ancient Assyrian king Sennacherib (Isaiah 37:36-37).

--

*Isaiah 14:28-29 / *Isa. 14:28 -

This could include reference to Palestina (the ancient Philistines) possibly being smitten by Tilgathpilneser king of Assyria in the time of Ahaz, king of Judah (2 Chronicles 28:18-21). Palestina could have been smitten again later by a subsequent king of Assyria, such as Sennacherib, in the time of Judah's king Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:13), the son of Ahaz (2 Kings 18:1).

--

*Isaiah 14:31 / *Isa. 14:31 -

The original Hebrew word (`ashan: H6227) translated as "a smoke" means just that, and it can refer to literal smoke (Joshua 8:20).

--

*Isaiah 16:11 / *Isa. 16:11 -

The original Hebrew words translated as "bowels" (me`ah: H4578) and "inward parts" (qereb: H7130) can both be translated as "heart" (Psalms 40:8, Jeremiah 9:8), in the sense of the figurative seat of emotions within a person. Isaiah 16:11 is referring to the (at that time) future, great grief someone would feel over the desolation of the once-proud, ancient nation of Moab (Isaiah 16:6-14). Compare what Jeremiah 48:36 says.

--

*Isaiah 17:1 / *Isa. 17:1 -

(*Damascus)

Damascus is said to be the oldest, continually-inhabited city on earth. But it could be destroyed by Israel's nuclear weapons during a future, all-out war (Isaiah 17:1). Yet this war will also break the power of Israel (Isaiah 17:4).

(See the "War" section of Revelation 13:5 below. Also, see 2 Kings 16:9 above)
