Notes: 1 Peter 1:18 (cont'd) To 2 Peter 3:10

In 1 Peter 1:18 the original Greek word (anastrophe: G0391) translated as "conversation" does not mean "talk" but "behavior" (Strong's Greek Dictionary) in the sense of how one lives one's life.

(Compare Psalms 37:14 above)

So when Christians are delivered from their "vain conversation" (1 Peter 1:18), they are delivered from the empty lives which non-Christians experience, and which they vainly try to fill with activities and things which will help to take their minds off of their inner emptiness and despair, yet which can never sate their need for a lasting meaning for their life. Non-Christians go home even from their theaters, stadiums, and volunteer-work with that empty feeling inside, which they then try to chase away until bedtime with videos, music, and pills.

But Jesus Christ came that "they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10), that they might have a rich, inner spiritual life filled with continual fellowship with their very Creator, YHWH God, filling them to fullness with His overflowing love, comfort, and care (Ephesians 3:16-21), and with the hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23).

*1 Peter 1:20 / *1 Pet. 1:20 -

The original Greek word (chronos: G5550) translated as "times" can refer to quite a long period. For example, the same Greek word is used in Acts 17:30 and Galatians 4:4 to refer to the "times" or "time" before the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which was thousands of years.

(See also Hebrews 1:2 above)

--

*1 Peter 1:23 / *1 Pet. 1:23 -

See 1 John 3:9 below.

--

*1 Peter 2:9-10 / *1 Pet. 2:9 -

This is referring to the Church as Israel, for it is quoting from Exodus 19:5b-6 and Hosea 2:23, which refer to Israel.

(See the "Tribes" section of Romans 11:17 above)

~

(Royal priesthood)

1 Peter 2:9 refers to those in the Church, who will reign with Jesus Christ as kings and priests on the earth during the future Millennium (Revelation 5:9-10, Revelation 20:4-6, Revelation 2:26-29, Matthew 19:28, Luke 22:30).

(See also Revelation 1:6 below)

--

*1 Peter 2:11 / *1 Pet. 2:11 -

This means that Christians are not to spiritually (through sinning) join the present, evil world-system (1 John 5:19), even though Christians physically live in it, and Jesus Christ does not want them to be physically taken out of it (John 17:14-18).

--

*1 Peter 2:13-14 / *1 Pet. 2:13-14 -

See Romans 13:1-2 above.

--

*1 Peter 2:16 / *1 Pet. 2:16 -

The original Greek word (kakia: G2549) translated as "maliciousness" can mean "wickedness" (Acts 8:22) or "evil" (Matthew 6:34).

--

*1 Peter 2:18 / *1 Pet. 2:18 -

The original Greek word (skolios: G4646) translated as "froward" can mean "crooked" (Philippians 2:15).

While this Greek word is used in the New Testament to refer to moral crookedness (Philippians 2:15, Acts 2:40, 1 Peter 2:18), the word can also include reference to literal, physical crookedness, such as a highway which is not straight (Luke 3:5). And so the word skolios is able to serve as the basis for the English word "scoliosis", which refers to a physical condition in which someone has a crooked spine, in the sense of a laterally curved spine. That is, if you viewed their spine from behind, it would look curved slightly in the form of an "S". While this is an abnormal condition, the "S" curvature of the spine when viewed from the side is normal.

The original Greek word (ptoesis: G4423) translated as "amazement" can mean "alarm" (Strong's Greek Dictionary).

--

*1 Peter 3:11 / *1 Pet. 3:11 -

The original Greek word (dioko: G1377) translated as "ensue", like the English word, can mean "pursue".

--

*1 Peter 3:18 / *1 Pet. 3:18 -

(Once)

See Romans 6:10 above.

1 Peter 3:18 means that Jesus Christ died for unjust "us", that is, elect people (1 Peter 1:2; 1 Peter 4:1), who all start out unjust (Romans 5:8), just as all nonelect people start out (and then forever remain) unjust (Romans 3:10, Romans 9:16-24).

(Compare 1 Timothy 6:13 above)

(Re: The *harrowing of hell / *OT believers)

All obedient believers who died during Old Testament times are now part of the Church in heaven (Hebrews 11:13-16, Hebrews 12:22-24). For now there are no believers outside of the Church (Ephesians 4:4-6). And 1 Peter 4:6, 1 Peter 3:18c-19, and Ephesians 4:9 show that there was (decades before 70 AD) a post-resurrection descent of Jesus Christ into Hades to preach the fulfillment of the Gospel (of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4) to the souls of the dead in Hades, after which preaching, Jesus ascended into heaven with all of the souls of those in Hades who had died in faith (Ephesians 4:8-9, Hebrews 11:13-16, Hebrews 12:22-24).

(See also 1 Thessalonians 3:13 above)

~

The "he" in 1 Peter 3:18-19 is Jesus Christ. And the time of His preaching by the Spirit in Hades was after His physical resurrection (1 Peter 3:18c-19).

(See also Matthew 12:40b above)

~

(Re: Does 1 Peter 4:6 contradict double predestination?)

No, it does not contradict double predestination (Romans 9:11-24) because the obedient elect individuals who lived during Old Testament times and who died in faith (Hebrews 11:13) did not go into the punishing part of Hades, but into a comforting part of Hades called the bosom of Abraham (Luke 16:22,25), who is the figurative father of all those with faith (Romans 4:16). And nonelect individuals are predestined not just to the punishing part of the current, temporary hell of Hades (Luke 16:23a, Greek: G0086), but also to the future, eternally punishing hell (Matthew 25:41,46) of Gehenna (Mark 9:45-46, Greek: G1067), the lake of fire and brimstone (Revelation 20:10,15, Revelation 14:10-11).

(See also the "Vessels of wrath" section of Romans 9:11 above. And see Matthew 25:41 above)

--

*1 Peter 4:7 / *1 Pet. 4:7 -

Because the end of all things has never happened, the "at hand" in 1 Peter 4:7 can be understood from the viewpoint of God, for whom 1,000 years are like one day (2 Peter 3:8-9, Psalms 90:4).

The end of all things (1 Peter 4:7) will not occur until about 3,000 AD, when, after the future Millennium and subsequent events (Revelation 20:7-10), heaven (the first heaven, the sky/atmosphere) and the earth (its surface) will be literally burned up (2 Peter 3:10) prior to the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15) and the subsequent creation of a New Heaven (atmosphere) and a New Earth (surface) (Revelation 21:1-8).

1 Peter 4:7 means that Christians living at any time before this happens should be living godly lives (2 Peter 3:11-18).

--

*1 Peter 4:17 / *1 Pet. 4:17 -

Here the judgment of the house of God does not refer to the judgment of non-Christian Israel, but the judgment of "us", the Church, which will not occur until Jesus Christ's future, Second Coming.

(See Matthew 24:48 above, and the "Tribes" section of Romans 11:17 above)

See Luke 17:10 above.

--

*1 Peter 5:7 / *1 Pet. 5:7 -

The way to cast all your care (worry) upon God is to immediately bring to Him in prayer anything that you become worried about at any time (Philippians 4:6-7). Then leave it in His hands, believing that He will take care of it (Mark 11:24) or that He will show you what you need to do (James 1:5).

--

*1 Peter 5:10 / *1 Pet. 5:10 -

The original Greek word (themelioo: G2311) translated as "settle" means to lay the foundation for something (Hebrews 1:10). God "settles" Christians by helping them to base their entire lives upon obedience to Jesus Christ (Matthew 7:24-29).

(See also Matthew 7:24 above)

--

*1 Peter 5:13 / *1 Pet. 5:13 -

This could refer to the literal city of Babylon which still existed at the time that the apostle Peter wrote this letter of 1 Peter in the first century AD.

Also, the literal city of Babylon has been rebuilt in our own time in what is now called Iraq.

(See also Isaiah 13(space) above)

--

*1 Peter 5:14 / *1 Pet. 5:14 -

The original Greek word (agape: G0026) translated as "charity" means "love" (John 13:35).

*2 Peter 1:5-11 / *2 Pet. 1:5 -

This gives no assurance that Christians will choose to give diligence to do all of the different things listed here, but shows that it is possible for a Christian to wrongly employ his free will to not do any of these things (2 Peter 1:9), meaning that it is possible for him to fail to obtain ultimate salvation (Matthew 25:26,30, John 15:2a). For doing all of these things is required to obtain ultimate salvation (2 Peter 1:10-11, cf. 1 Peter 1:17, Romans 2:6-8, James 2:24, Matthew 7:21).

(Re: The transfiguration)

See paragraph 2b of Matthew 16:28 above.

--

*2 Peter 1:19-21 / *2 Pet. 1:19 -

This means that in our taking heed to Biblical prophecy in anticipation of Jesus Christ's future, Second Coming, our interpretation of Biblical prophecy must be in accord with God's Holy Spirit. For Biblical prophecy was not written by men based on their own human understanding or desire, but, like the entire Bible (2 Timothy 3:16), was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

~

2 Peter 1:19 means that Biblical prophecy itself will definitely be fulfilled, not "could be" fulfilled. But what Christian Futurism does is explore various possibilities for exactly how all of the details in Biblical prophecy will be fulfilled.

(For example, see the "Eikon" section of Revelation 13:14 below)

--

*2 Peter 1:20-21 / *2 Pet. 1:20 -

(*Private interpretation)

(Re: Full preterism?)

What even the original writers-down of the "Jesus is coming back soon" verses in the Bible may have mistakenly thought was meant by "soon" was not determinative of what those verses actually mean, because of 2 Peter 1:20-21, 2 Peter 3:8-9, and Psalms 90:4.

(See also the "Soon" section of Revelation 1:1 below)

~

(Interpretation)

In 2 Peter 1:20 the original Greek word (epilusis: G1955) translated as "interpretation" can mean "explanation" (Strong's Greek Dictionary).

--

*2 Peter 2:1-3 / *2 Pet. 2:1 -

(Damnable *heresies) / (*Heresy)

2 Peter 2:1 adds the key word "damnable" before "heresies" because believing in a heresy is one of the things which will cause people to be damned (Galatians 5:19-21). The question then becomes: What counts as a heresy as opposed to a false belief which will not result in the loss of salvation? One way to approach an answer to this would be to ask: What are the beliefs and practices which result in our salvation? Then we can define a heresy as any belief which contradicts any of these saving beliefs and practices.

Two key saving beliefs are the suffering and death of Jesus on the Cross for our sins and His rising physically from the dead on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). We must also believe that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah and the Son of God (1 John 2:22-23, John 3:36) and that He is in the flesh (1 John 4:3). We must also believe that Jesus is God, for there is no way that He could suffer and die for our sins unless He is God.

(See 1 John 2:2 below)

But still the core of saving beliefs and their related practices is not complete, for we must add the practices of water-immersion baptism and the taking of Communion.

(See Mark 16:16 and John 6:53 above. Also, see 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 above)

~

(Denying the Lord that bought them)

Those bought by Jesus Christ (2 Peter 2:1b) do not have to include everyone, but can include only Christians.

2 Peter 2:1b-3 can refer to Christians who were on the right path but then at some subsequent point wrongly employed their free will to forsake the right way, to go astray (2 Peter 2:15), to become heretical and apostate, even denying the Lord who bought them (2 Peter 2:1b, Luke 8:13; 1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Timothy 4:3-4). This denial, or apostasy, will result in their ultimate loss of salvation (Hebrews 6:4-8, John 15:6; 2 Timothy 2:12b, Galatians 5:20c-21).

(See Hebrews 6:4 above)

~

(Re: Destruction / G0684 = annihilation?)

No, see Matthew 7:13 above.

~

(Privily)

The original Greek word (pareisago: G3919) translated as "privily shall bring in" literally means "to lead in aside" (Strong's Greek Dictionary), that is, to lead some parishioners, aside from the rest, into heresies. This is how Satan always works. He will not try to lead an entire congregation astray at one time. For there will always be some in the congregation who will recognize the heresy and call it out to the rest. Instead, he seeks out a few on the side whom he thinks he can persuade. And then he hopes that the heresy can spread gradually and privately from them to others in the congregation until a critical mass of the congregation has been deceived into believing the heresy, so that if it is subsequently called out by one or two others in the congregation who know the truth, the congregation will then ask them to leave so that they might not "bring division" into the church.

*2 Peter 2:2 / *2 Pet. 2:2 -

The original Greek word (apoleia: G0684) translated as "pernicious ways" can mean "ruining ways".

(Re: Do you think that Satan is in chains?)

No, that is one of the mistaken ideas of Amillennialism, which does not realize that 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 1:6 refer only to those fallen angels who committed the crime in Genesis 6:2 and Genesis 6:4. Compare Job 1:6, Job 2:1, and Job 38:7, where "sons of God" means angels.

See Matthew 12:36 above.

--

*2 Peter 2:12 / *2 Pet. 2:12 -

The original Greek word (phthora: G5356) translated as "destroyed" does not require annihilation, for the same Greek word is used elsewhere to refer to a dead body being buried in "corruption" (1 Corinthians 15:42), not a dead body being annihilated.

Also, the Greek word (kataphtheiro: G2704) translated as "utterly perish" does not require annihilation, for the same Greek word is used elsewhere to refer to men of "corrupt" minds (2 Timothy 3:8), not annihilated minds.

--

*2 Peter 2:13 / *2 Pet. 2:13 -

The original Greek word (apate: G0539) translated as "deceivings" can mean "delusions" (Strong's Greek Dictionary).

--

*2 Peter 2:14 / *2 Pet. 2:14 -

Here, "cannot cease from sin" in the original Greek is simply "not ceasing from sin", which can refer to Christians who had repented from their sins and were on the right path but then at some subsequent point they wrongly employed their free will to forsake the right way, to go astray (2 Peter 2:15), back to their former sins (2 Peter 2:20-22) without any subsequent repentance.

(See also Hebrews 10:26 above)

--

*2 Peter 2:15-16 / *2 Pet. 2:15 -

This explains why the angel withstood Balaam (Numbers 22:32b) even though Balaam was obeying God's command (Numbers 22:20) to go and prophesy to Balak the king of Moab (Numbers 22). That is, Balaam must have started to get covetous, thinking about how Balak could give him a lot of money for prophesying to him, even though Balaam had said that he would not prophesy for money (Numbers 22:18). Also, later Balaam went completely overboard (Numbers 31:16, Revelation 2:14) possibly in exchange for a huge load of cash (Jude 1:11; 2 Peter 2:15b; cf. 1 Timothy 6:10).

--

*2 Peter 2:19 / *2 Pet. 2:19 -

Compare what John 8:34 says.

--

*2 Peter 2:20-22 / *2 Pet. 2:20 -

This refers to Christians who had truly escaped the pollutions of the world (2 Peter 2:20, cf. 2 Peter 1:4b), they had truly been washed (2 Peter 2:22b, cf. 1 Corinthians 6:11, Hebrews 10:22) through knowing Jesus Christ (2 Peter 2:20, cf. 2 Peter 1:3b, John 17:3,17). But they nonetheless at some subsequent point wrongly employed their free will to return back to sinning without repentance, so that their ultimate fate will be worse than if they had never been saved at all (2 Peter 2:20b-21, cf. Hebrews 10:26-29).

(See Hebrews 10:26 above)

~

(Re: How can someone sin "without repentance" if he has repented at least once?) / (*Initial repentance / Subsequent *repentance)

It is possible (2 Peter 2:20-22) because there is initial repentance at the point of initial salvation (Mark 1:15, Acts 3:19, Acts 11:18, Acts 26:20; 2 Timothy 2:25) and then there is subsequent repentance (or the lack of it: Hebrews 10:26-29) for sins committed sometime subsequent to initial salvation (2 Corinthians 12:21, Revelation 2:5, Revelation 2:16, Revelation 2:21-22, Revelation 3:3, Revelation 3:19).

(See also the "Initial salvation" section of Ephesians 2:8 above)

--

*2 Peter 3:3-4 / *2 Pet. 3:3 -

This refers to people who would, for example, mockingly point to Jesus Christ's first century AD promise in Revelation 22:20 to return quickly, not realizing that from the viewpoint of God even the passing of some 2,000 years is like the passing of only two days (2 Peter 3:8, Psalms 90:4). Christians should look to the future fulfillment of Jesus Christ's Second Coming from the viewpoint of God, not humans, for whom the passing of some 2,000 years seems like a long delay for its fulfillment (2 Peter 3:9).

--

*2 Peter 3:7 / *2 Pet. 3:7 -

This refers to the future destruction of the "heavens" (the sky/atmosphere) and the earth (its surface) at the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11 to 21:1), which is when non-Christians of all times will undergo final judgment.

(See also sections 3-4 of 2 Peter 3:10 below)

--

*2 Peter 3:8 / *2 Pet. 3:8 -

(Re: *Exactly?)

2 Peter 3:8 and Psalms 90:4 do not have to mean exactly 1,000 years, for God can round numbers down. For example, 1 Kings 7:23 in effect rounds 3.14 down to 3.

(See 1 Kings 7:23 above...)

Similarly, 2 Peter 3:8 and Psalms 90:4 do not have to be giving an exact equation, but can be giving a general idea. Just as God can in effect round 3.14 down to 3, so He could round something like 1,140 down to 1,000.

--

*2 Peter 3:9b / *2 Pet. 3:9b -

(Re: Means that God wants to save everyone?)

No, for 2 Peter 3:9b means that God is not willing that any elect individuals perish, but that all elect individuals repent. For the "any" and the "all" refer back to the "us" (or "you"), which refers back to elect individuals (2 Peter 1:10). God is willing that nonelect individuals perish, for He purposely created them to perish (Romans 9:21-22). The ability to repent comes only as a miraculous gift from God (2 Timothy 2:25, Acts 11:18), and He gives it only to elect individuals. For God is not willing that nonelect individuals repent (Romans 9:18-22).

(See also the "Vessels of wrath" section of Romans 9:11 above)

~

(Re: Does 2 Peter 3:9b means once-saved-always-saved?)

No, for elect individuals who have initially repented can, at some later point, wrongly employ their free will to return to unrepentant sin, so that their ultimate fate will be worse than if they had never been saved at all (2 Peter 2:20-22, Hebrews 10:26-29).

(See also 2 Peter 2:20 and Hebrews 10:26 above)

--

*2 Peter 3:10-13 / *2 Pet. 3:10 -

Regarding 2 Peter 3:10-13, in the Day of the Lord will occur the destruction of heaven (the first heaven: the sky/atmosphere) and the earth (its surface) at the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11, Revelation 21:1). And this will be followed by the creation of a new atmosphere and surface for the earth (2 Peter 3:13, Revelation 21:1), onto which the literal city of New Jerusalem, God the Father's house (John 14:2, Revelation 21:2-3), will descend from the third heaven (Revelation 21:2-3).

But the Day of the Lord will not immediately bring the destruction of the earth's atmosphere and surface, for the Day of the Lord will begin at Jesus Christ's future, Second Coming (1 Corinthians 1:7-8) as a thief (2 Peter 3:10a, Revelation 16:15), and after His Second Coming, He will establish His Kingdom physically on the earth with the physically resurrected Church for 1,000 years (Revelation 19:7 to 20:6, Revelation 5:10, Revelation 2:26-29, Psalms 66:3-4, Psalms 72:8-11, Zechariah 14:3-21).

And after the 1,000 years, the Gog/Magog rebellion will occur (Revelation 20:7-10, Ezekiel chapters 38-39). And after its defeat, at least seven years will occur (Ezekiel 39:9b) before the earth's atmosphere and surface are destroyed at the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11). All of these events, from Jesus' Second Coming to the Great White Throne Judgment, will be part of the Day of the Lord, for it is not a 24-hour day, but to God is like a 1,000-year "day" (2 Peter 3:8, Psalms 90:4).

(See also 2 Corinthians 12:2(space) above)

(Re: The DOTL as Judgment)

The future Day of the Lord which will span from Jesus Christ's Second Coming, then through the subsequent Millennium and up to the Great White Throne Judgment, will be one long time period of judgment from God. For it will begin with the judgment at the Second Coming (Revelation 19:11-21), then extend through the judgment during the Millennium (Zechariah 14:19, Revelation 2:26-29), then include the judgment on Gog, Magog, and Satan after the Millennium (Revelation 20:7-10, Ezekiel chapters 38-39), and then end with the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15).

But the future Day of the Lord will not consist only of judgment, for it will begin with the physical resurrection (if dead) or changing (if alive) of Christians into immortal physical bodies at Jesus' Christ's future, Second Coming (1 Corinthians 15:21-23,51-53, Revelation 19:7 to 20:6; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17), and then the rapture (catching up together/gathering together) of the resurrected and changed Christians to Jesus (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8, Matthew 24:30-31, Revelation 19:7 to 20:6), and then Christians physically reigning on the earth with Jesus during the Millennium (Revelation 20:4-6, Revelation 5:10, Revelation 2:26-29).

And the physical resurrection and changing of Christians into immortality at Jesus Christ's future, Second Coming will be the ultimate salvation of Christians.

(See the "Ultimate salvation" section of Ephesians 2:8 above)
