Hi JM

MJ is very fragmented today in what it believes, and what it doesn't! There is no universal understanding of what MJ's believe, as you will see in these fora - it is very, very muddy water!

Dr Richard Harvey has produced a book entitled: Mapping Messianic Jewish Theology - a constructive approach. It compares and contrasts a number of MJ views on God's nature, activity and attributes, The Messiah, Torah in theory, Torah in practice and eschatology (end times). It is the only book, so far, that looks at and compares the views and tries to bring some order to the various understandings held by many other well known academics and pastors in the MJ movement. It presents a good overview and discussion of the many facets of the movement.

Richard is Academic Dean and Tutor in Hebrew Jewish Studies at All Nations College in the UK - he is, himself, a Jew. His book is endorsed by Professor Dan Cohn-Sherbok. Dr. David Stern, Professor Darrell Bock, Dr. Mark Kinzer, and Professor Daniel Juster. It is published by Paternoster Press (2009).

One excellent resource I'dd add is by Dr. Daniel Boyarin, whose work with Paul is very noteworthy in showing the evolution of thought - especially as it concerns his work with Gentiles and how their identity was reshaped within his framework (based on Christ)

More can be found in Two Radical Jews a review article of Daniel Boyarin, A Radical Jew: Paul and the Politics of Identity.

Wow! 2000 views since July 1st 2015!

Keep posting book, journal and web-site information (or links) about Messianic Judaism - there clearly are lots of people keen to know about the faith we hold.

The Helsinki Consultation consists of an international fellowship of Jewish scholars and theologians who acknowledge Jesus as Israel’s Messiah and who live as members of diverse ecclesial bodies. This website makes public the results of our efforts, in hope that they might be of benefit to other Jewish believers in Jesus and to the Jewish people as a whole.
The Consultation includes Messianic Jews and Jews from Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox churches. Named after the city in which the first meeting was held in 2010, it originates in the desire of these Jewish disciples of Jesus to learn from one another and to establish a vehicle for exploring their common concerns.

The Consultation aims at elaborating and promoting a united voice for Jewish followers of Jesus.

While holding differing views on many important questions, the participants agree that the existence and life of Jews within the body of Christ has theological significance for the whole. It is our conviction that the Church in its essence is the communion of Jews and those from the nations called to faith in Christ.

Accordingly, we believe that:

-The Church must find a way to support Jews in its midst in sustaining a distinct Jewish identity.

Messianic Jews seek to fulfill this goal through establishing Messianic Jewish ecclesial communities. This may not be possible or desirable for Jews in Catholic, Protestant, or Orthdodox churches, but lessons for all may still be learned from Messianic Jews.

-Jewish believers in Jesus must live in visible communion with those from the nations who share their faith.

Jews in Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox churches express this reality through membership in communities which are predominantly non-Jewish in composition. This may not be possible or desirable for Messianic Jews, but Messianic Jews might learn lessons from their brothers´ and sisters´ experience.

The Helsinki Consultation meets annually in order to exchange views on these vital issues.

This exchange takes place through the presentation and discussion of papers and the preparation of a joint statement at the conclusion of the meetings.

This website contains the complete contents of the 12-volume Jewish Encyclopedia, which was originally published between 1901-1906. The Jewish Encyclopedia, which recently became part of the public domain, contains over 15,000 articles and illustrations.

This online version contains the unedited contents of the original encyclopedia. Since the original work was completed almost 100 years ago, it does not cover a significant portion of modern Jewish History (e.g., the creation of Israel, the Holocaust, etc.). However, it does contain an incredible amount of information that is remarkably relevant today.

Jewish Roots
Reading the New Testament as a Jewish Document
by Isaac Israel
Written by a Messianic Jew who received barmitzvah-training in an Orthodox synagogue, Jewish Roots is a totally unique exploration of the Hebraic foundations of the Christian faith. This volume provides the reader with concepts and terminology that will fully illuminate the instructions of Yeshua (Jesus) and the Sheliachim (Apostles). Now the precious drashot (teachings) of Messiah can be understood by modern Christians as they were meant to be understood by Jewish believers two thousand years ago. Large Print Edition.

This looks like a great list, lots I haven't seen here. Has anybody mentioned: Messianic Jewish Congregations - Who Sold This Business to the Gentiles? by Jeffrey Wasserman, which is an analysis of Messianic congregations in the US and Israel (doesn't include UK statistics, sadly). Humorously written and informative. I think it may have been his doctoral thesis or something.

When I started this thread, some years ago now, just using the name 'Heber', I published my Master's Degree bibliography, which included a number of items that were against the Messianic Movement, or Christianity, as such. I did so on the basis that the really wise will want to know the arguments made by anti-missionary groups which, in turn, will enable us to know how they measure our output as Christians, or Messianic Jews or Gentiles. We, in turn, can also strengthen our study and improve our confidence in responding to their output, by at least taking the trouble to see what they say. It will also, I hope, teach us enough to be able to spot anti-missionaries on this site, and in other places, as and when they appear.

A good place to look, to whet your appetite is http://jewsforjudaism.org/ . Go to their Help Center (sic) and read the 'documents' page, primarily, though other pages are relevant, of course. There are a number of other anti-missionary sites available, but Jews for Judaism is worth a look!

I am currently reading:

Vermes, Geza. Christian Beginnings from Nazereth to Nicaea AD 30-325 (Penguin Books, London. 2012). UK price: £9.99 PB

The writer gives his readers a critical, challenging, and yet really engaging look at nascent Christianity.

There is also an excellent section, at the start of the book, on 'Charismatic Judaism from Moses to Jesus'. That should spark some interesting threads on the MJ fora, as will his writings on Paul's letters and John's Gospel!!

You may not agree with all he says - but it is a must-read book, I assure you.

I've just bought an excellent, if a little costly, book -

Rabbi Koren. Z.M. The Beit HaMikdash - The Temple and The Holy Mount . ArtScroll and The Western Wall Foundation. Shaar Press and Mesorah Publications NY. (2013) Cost in the UK £70

If you are interested in the subject matter, you will find this book very helpful. There are a number of photographs and various full colour art-work pages, along with very clear text, supported by quotes from the Tanach. The work is appreciated by the Chief Rabbi of Israel, whose letter appears in the pages of the book.

Here's a new Bible - came out in September 2016

The Complete Jewish Study Bible - insights for Jews and Christians
Hendrickson Bible & Messianic Jewish Publishers & Resources. Peabody MA. 2016

UK hardback version £36 from Amazon

Contributors include a good number of well known Messianic theologians. The basic version of the Bible is Dr. David Stern's well known Complete Jewish Bible to which much other material has been added, and personal names are now in transliterated Hebrew in both parts, as are some other important words, for places and specific other parts of scripture. It contains a large bibliography of books that relate to Messianic interests, as well as 'potted' relevant biographical information about those involved in the project.

Do not throw away your copy of David Stern's Jewish New Testament Commentary - this Bible should, in my opinion, be used alongside that Commentary.

I have just read:

Goodman, M. Why should I stand behind the mechitzah when I could be a prayer leader? Targum Press/ Feldheim. Southfield, MI. 2002

Marina Goodman writes with great clarity and sensitivity on a subject that raises the hackles of many in both Judaism and Christianity: the place of women in life and worship. Do not be put off by the title! This is no feminist rant, or a tirade against seating in synagogues, though that subject does appear, very briefly, in the epilogue!; it is a book written from her experience in Orthodox Judaism, and the questions, and answers, that confronted her on that journey. It is about life in all its Jewishness for a woman who gradually discovered the joys of Orthodox Judaism, and the way it changed her life for the better, in every sense of the word.

I write this commendation as a Messianic Gentile - a theologian - because within this book she writes some profound truths about G_d's plans for both sexes, from Creation on into the modern world. Her opening up of the theme, at the beginning of the book, of 'two become one' in relation to men and women (and, in my opinion, by extension, the two faiths can become one) will be an eye opener to many, I am sure, in Judaism, Messianic Judaism and in Christianity.

Men, in particular, should read this book, or at least the first 85 pages! The remainder of the book covers issues to do with modesty, family and prayer which are aimed more at women, but men also will benefit from reading it, in the light of Marina's exposition on the theme 'two become one' at the beginning of the book.

If you wish to comment on the subject of this post please start a thread in one of the fora - DO NOT use this thread as it is not a discussion or debate thread

Thank you for clarifying that issue.

Let's continue posting here with links to web-sites that are of interest to Messianic Judaism, and information about books / journals that MJ's might wish to read.

If you are commending a book please include the Author or Editor name, the full title of the book, the name of the publisher and the year of publication for the version you are commending (that info., can be found just inside the book). It may also help to say how much it cost, in your local currency, just to give people a figure to budget for in these tough times!

If you are commending a Journal, the name of the Journal and the Company or Organisation producing the Journal should be shown, as well as how often the Journal is published OR a link to the web-site of the Company or Organisation will suffice.

Please do not quote text from the books, journals or web-sites - leave that for those interested to find for themselves. You may, however, say why you are commending the material to us :)

Let's go!

If you are into Jewish Studies here is a good book to buy:

Goodman, M. et al (Ed) The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Studies Oxford University Press, Oxford, UK. (2005) (PB) 1007pp incl. indices.

At the end of each section there is a lengthy Bibliography of other material related to that particular theme, so that readers may continue to broaden their knowledge of the subject matter.

Editor: Martin Goodman is Professor of Jewish Studies, University of Oxford.
Jeremy Cohen is Professor of Jewish Studies, Tel Aviv University & David Sorkin is Professor of Jewish History, University of Wisconsin.
