If the employee's position wasn't "Chief Diversity Officer" I would agree with the employee.

If she wasn't willing to follow her job description and protect the rights of discriminated-against minority groups, she should have had the grace to resign on her own and find a more suitable position.

What does homosexual union have to do with "diversity" in a collegiate context? Please provide proof that homosexuality is a "discriminated against" group in the context of college life. Are gay students "mysteriously failing" at this campus (or any campus for that matter...) This is such a ridiculous straw man.

The parents of the late Tyler Clementi, who have started a foundation after their son jumped off a bridge, would beg to differ with you.
Tyler Clementi - The New York Times

Clementi's roommate was charged with 15 counts, including bias intimidation — a hate crime that was based on the victim’s sexual orientation — and invasion of privacy and was convicted on all counts.

That was a crime by a student not discrimination by a university body or faculty. I stand by my previous statement.

When does signing a petition at Church when you're off the clock get you put on leave?

Her personal views would not affect her on the job. Thats what politicians say constantly.

That is not the new order of business though. "By any means necessary" is the cry of the modern "progressive." There are no off-limits areas. I am encouraged by the note in the article though
This shows me that at least Mr. Levin is not willing to violate anyone else's rights to achieve his political goals.

The tolerant seem to be taking the form of big brother & removing freedom of speech & thought.

Her personal beliefs do not prevent her from doing her job. And her job should not dictate to her personal beliefs inside the Church.

All the "progressives" had to do was take control of the education system and then just wait out the old guard. Eventually the traditional "common sense" is not very common anymore and the younger generation has not been taught classical Constitutionality. The culture reflects this and has for a while. People think the Constitution provides them freedom FROM religion even if it means interfering with another's freedom OF religion. They also have been told the "separation of Church and State" lie so long that they don't know any better.

This is right out of a textbook: "The Establishment Clause was intended to prevent any governmental endorsement or support of religion."

There is nothing in the Constitution prohibiting free religious practice of any government official or employee even while on the job. Congress praying "God bless America" does not in any way, shape or form constitute the creation of a theocracy. The Establishment Clause was and still does prohibit the federal government from ESTABLISHING a state religion or church. The modern interpretation of the clause is purely a liberal device to diminish the impact of God and replace it with a reverence for the State...

I tend to think people in goverment & colleges are not ignorant of that but are simply hypocritical. Or just fall back on the old excuse on it is all in how you interpret it.

The Tyler Clementi Foundation has numerous links of organizations established to protect gay teens and young adults from bullying and cyberbullying, to prevent suicide--which is always more prevalent in those who feel isolated and different, and to educate students about the damage bullying does.

    Here's one such organization:

About/History | GLSEN: Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network

I am glad you believe that LGBT young people are never bullied or discriminated against---obviously that means that you would never engage in such behavior or discrimination yourself.

I applaud you for your commitment to diversity.

I, alas, have known young LGBT people who have experienced discrimination and hatred.

Off the wall. Nothing to do with signing a petition in Church off the clock. Nice try though.

I think many people experience being singled-out and bullied. Some for being less than attractive, some for being overweight, some for being too intelligent for others' liking and some for no apparent reason at all... I'm certainly not condoning this behavior but the answer is the same for all involved. We don't need to be "more" aware of homosexuality or issues concerning homosexuals to treat EVERYONE with courtesy and respect.

My biggest issue is that I have been around long enough to see how groups like the Gay Activist Alliance used bullying and terror tactics to achieve their goals. They protested the American Psychiatric Association gatherings and targeted members in order to get the APA to remove homosexuality from the DSM as a mental disorder. This wasn't based on years of careful research or even a well thought out argument it was purely political and purely aggressive activism. They knew that without removing homosexuality from the DSM that the label would interfere with their long term goals and agenda which we see playing out today. The militant gay activists do not want "equality" they want to dismantle any group or institution that would argue against the nature of homosexuality itself.

There are some jobs that require an employee to take a lower profile in her private life, and I believe this is one of them.

Journalists, for example, shouldn't be spouting off their own opinions all the time because it is thought to compromise their neutrality and journalistic integrity if they do.

I'm just a freelancer, but I am pretty careful to maintain a fairly neutral position on my Facebook page. I certainly have opinions, but if I want to write about them I do so anonymously.

I also follow that policy because, as someone who works in communications for a non-profit, I want to maintain good relationships with all the different organizations in town--from the Chamber of Commerce to the Church Women United. If I'm badmouthing one group, it can harm my organization's fund-raising capability.

I got an Obama bumper sticker for my car yesterday and gave it away to one of my friends. It just about kills me sometimes.

That's the price I pay. And that's the price the Director of Diversity should have paid.

She has every right to participate in the political process as we all do & maintain her job. How she performs her job is all that matters.

If she had signed a petition to support the banning of interracial marriage, would it be the same? Should she keep her job as diversity officer?

There are some jobs where religious or personal beliefs could come into conflict with work duties. I'm not sure if this is one of those cases or not, but her job title does seem to have some bearing.

I'm sure if the faculty find an instance where they believe her personal beliefs have effected her job performance then they will and should act. Until then they are punishing her for an inert ideal. This is what happens when you respond to aggressive activism with fear. You stop rational decisions and make knee-jerk reactions because you fear criticism or lawsuit threats. Thank God not all gay people are of the same camp. Ironically the only one displaying common sense in that article is the campaign manager for the very legislation she petitioned to stop.
