I wouldn't consider that to be "nearly extinguished"
I would suggest that the decline of religion in Europe has more to do with history than science.
In France the Church was part and parcel of the abusive gov't there that was overthrown by the (abusive) French Revolution. It has also been argued that the lack of competition, and lack of infusions of fresh blood has made at least some of the European State Churches complacent and less than vigorous.
Out of curiousity, on what do you base your statement that there is a stronger emphasis on teaching science in Europe?
