It seems that Secretary Kerry is the first Secretary of State to use a government email account.

US government officials who travel overseas a great deal tend to use non-official email accounts because, shocking as this may (not) seem, the security behind services like Google is actually more effective than the security in the older versions of Exchange or Lotus Notes used by government agencies.
