There are people alive today that witnessed Jim Crow laws.

Also, what are we letting anybody get away with? Our prison population statistics don't show a great amount of people "getting away" with things.

My ancestors didn't bring them over.

They were too busy being either serfs, dominating other ethnic groups, or being dominated by those same ethnic groups, and by ethnic, I mean Russian, German, Austro-Hungarian, Ukrainian, Czech, Central and Eastern European.

Do you see black folks rioting through the streets over cases in which blacks kill blacks? Show me some. Do you see them getting on television or getting a hold of nutcases like Sharpton and Jackson to represent and defend them against other blacks? Well, not really! And Zimmerman's case was a witch hunt with the media trying to affect an outcome.

And as far as your "newsflash," nobody here said Sharpton and Jackson speak for "all black people." We merely stated that these two guys have selective outrage and come out and lead crazy protests at the drop of a hat. Please show me where I said that every black man and woman is a zombie follower of these two. I'd like to see the reference for your impassioned rant there, BB.

Your basic thesis here, which is laughably preposterous, is that since I find George Zimmerman to not be at fault and since I see Trayvon Martin as the aggressor, then by saying that on a Catholic message board, I'm somehow the type of guy that keeps black folks from the Catholic Church? Newsflash, BB, I'm Orthodox, not Catholic. Secondly, do you really think the black community, when considering Catholicism, comes on CF to OBOB to read gurney's posts to see if he's racist or tolerant to then decide if they should go ahead and convert....wooah boy....

The only part of your post that I think made even a 10th of an ounce of sense was the last part about hugging your son. Not sure why you had to point out his race. My son is part Filipino and part Anglo like me. I hug him every day and don't think about his race or relate him to crimes or other stuff out there in this sick world. I just hug my three children because I love them. Simple math. Keep hugging that boy. You're obviously a loving mom, but when it comes to racial issues, you and I just disagree. The extent of the education I got on the matter (growing up in a predominatly black neighborhood and getting my rear kicked all the time)--was by watching Lavar Burton in the movie 'Roots'. That's the way the public schools taught that it went down, and who was I to question it?

You don't see many Germans flying swastikas and when you do, they are ostracized from their peers and labeled as...well, I can't say that word here, but they are labelled as the sort of people that they are.

I spent last week in Arkansas for work. I had never spent much time in the south outside of large cities before. I was apalled at how much overt racism there is by whites against blacks in 2013. Call me naive, but I had no idea that things were still as bad as I observed.

That's not the reason, Mike. There are laws that prohibit one from branding Nazi paraphernalia (Swastika) and from doing the Sieg Heil salute. There very much is a far right-wing presence in Germany. Then again, they are everywhere.

I've heard it said for the past 30 years by teachers, professors, everyone, that since whites have oppressed blacks through slavery, we have to cut them slack to even the score? When is the score even?

White people discriminated against other white people at the inception of this country.

It's human nature for people to do this to eachother it's called sin. Look at the hutus & tutsis in Rwanda. the hutus slaughtered the tutsis to the tune of a million people out of drunken drug induced jealousy. That was in the 90s. Where were we for that?

this turned ugly quickly to answer your question, there's still racial inequality in society unfortunately to a pretty high degree. They did a study where if your name sounded black on applications you were less likely to get call backs, even with exact same qualifications as someone with a white name. In certain states like Georgia they still have segregated proms, in at least one school where ones white only, others black only... I'm sure in terms of police they get harassed more, granted crime rates are a great deal higher with black/latino in certain areas than with whites, but the point is racism sadly is very much still in existence in various forms of life. That goes both ways, but more so one way in terms of big things.

So please consider not falling into that mindset that society is trying to make you feel guilty for slavery, seeing you probably weren't alive during that time, as I don't think most black people feel that way, but the race inequalities of modern day are still a very big issues.

What part of Arkansas were you in? I don't notice any overt racism in this part of Arkansas (western Arkansas, river valley region). When it happens, it's usually older, pre desegregation folks who say those things.
