Zech 14:9

Those who are familiar with the Aleinu know Zech 14:9 well. It reads in Hebrew:

vehayah YHWH lemelekh `al-kol-ha'arets bayom hahu' yihyeh YHWH 'echad ushemo 'echad.

The phrase I want to ask about is:

bayom hahu' yihyeh YHWH 'echad

The last two words are the same as the last two words of the Shema`. But here they appear with the word yihyeh, which is the 3rd person masculine singular imperfect from hayah. Hayah means be, frequently in the sense of becoming or happening and the imperfect is the common way of expressing future. Therefore this phase translates as:

in that day YHWH will be (or become) echad

Since the Shema` declares YHWH echad what does it mean to become echad in that day?

Personally, I believe that Zech 14 is expounded by Rev 19-22. There are many similarities. There appears to be no direct quotation of HaShem being one though. On the other hand, it does state that the throne of both HaShem and the Lamb will be together (Rev 22:3). I believe that it is possible that Zech 14 refers to the Final establishment of the Lamb as Coregent with HaShem. They are Echad in all respects. Previously Echad in purpose, they are now Echad in rulership/location/etc as well. To restore Echad between man and HaShem, Yeshua took on humanity (i.e. A body though hast prepared me etc Isaiah) which was a breach in the Echad between HaShem and Yeshua/The Word. Yeshua does not reclaim His throne until His enemies are made His footstool. He does not regain His portion (Israel and the Goyim) until after the purifciation and until New Jerusalem exists. At that point, it is completely elevated to the position were He is completely Echad with HaShem.

Just my thoughts. hmmm...

Interestingly, I believe that since Yeshua will always retain a portion of His Humanity, this Covenant can not be broken. The Siniac covenant required a set of services and mitzvot for HaShem to exist in Eretz...to be Echad with Israel. However, HaShem will always be Echad with man in the most intimate way because Yeshua took on humanity. It is, as Ezekiel says, an Everlasting Covenant.

I learned my Hebrew mainly from teachers in the congregation. However, my Hebrew is basically Biblical and prayer book Hebrew not modern Israeli/conversational Hebrew. Once I get past: Ma shlomkha? or Ma nishma? I have pretty much exhausted my conversational Hebrew. Ledabber Ivrit lo qal li!

Am I understanding you to be saying that the translational value of echad is the English word "one" in both the Shema` and Zech 14:9. If this is so, what is the meaning of the final phrase ... ushemo 'echad?
