No- chicken is flesh; we can not eat flesh (we say bye bye to the flesh during lent) whether that flesh be red meat or white meat from animals or fowl.Abiel said:OK. I think I am getting it. No meat on Fridays. Chicken is poultry not meat. SO chicken is allowed on Fridays. Except the rules toughen up for Lent. Am I getting there?
Abiel said:So...flesh of any sort is not allowed in Lent. Flesh of the meaty sort is not allowed om Fridays outside lent. Flesh of the poultry sort is allowed on Fridays outside lent. Flesh is primarily land based. Water based creatures are not flesh. Is that right?

Outside of Lent, in the US, we must do penance on Fridays. We may abstain from meat, or we can eat meat and do some other penance.
"Meat" includes mammals and birds. Fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects are not meat.
You do not have to fast outside of lent. Fast are voluntary outside of lent. Only on Fridays during lent we abstain from meat of all kinds. Outside of lent you can eat meant on Friday if you want.Abiel said:So...flesh of any sort is not allowed in Lent. Flesh of the meaty sort is not allowed om Fridays outside lent. On the Fridays outside of Lent the U.S. bishops conference obtained the permission of the Holy See for Catholics in the US to substitute a penitential, or even a charitable, practice of their own choosing. They must do some penitential/charitable practice on these Fridays. For most people the easiest practice to consistently fulfill will be the traditional one, to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year. During Lent abstinence from meat on Fridays is obligatory in the United States as elsewhere.
