Hello all youth pastors, as doglover said in another thread, you guys are truely amazing.

Well on to my question. I am 16 and have felt God calling me to minister to my peirs. I also have felt God calling me to possibly be a youth pastor.

I was wondering what books you would reccomend that would help my now in ministering to my fellow students. Also any books that will help me in deciding if youth ministry is what God is pointing me towards.

Thanks

If you like to read, I would recommend "A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael".

If you are called to serve, that book will really speak to you and give you much inspiration. I bought it for a student of mine that is called to the ministry and we have been reading and discussing it chapter by chapter.

You can read "Purpose Driven Youth Ministry" by Doug Feilds. It' s not a bad book, but I'd not take it and try to do everything he says. Oh, I like him and his talks. . .sure. . .just, the book. . .not so much the whole idea of being there and caring rather than the church growth movement. You can get some great ideas from it, though.

Read "My First Two Years of Youth Ministry" by Doug Fields first. He says it himself that the PDYM book is more for building and a how-to guide but yet the first two years book is more of his experiences and just prepares you to become an effective youth leader.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to let you know about an awesome book I just found. It's called "Lead Like Jesus", by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges. I find it's especially great for leadership classes within a church....

“One of our world’s great problems is ego-centric, self-serving leadership – leaders who think people exist for their benefit, instead of vice versa. In stark contrast, Jesus’ modeled servant leadership, leading by example. He said, “I came to serve not to be served.” Now, two thousand years later, Jesus has over 2.1 billion followers, which makes Him the undisputed greatest leader of all time. No one else comes close! This is why you need to know how to lead like Jesus. He is the only flawless example. That’s why you should read this book!”

"Shine: Make Them Wonder What You've Got" by the Newsboys, and "A New Kind of Christian" triolgy by Brian McLaren. All of those books are great in talking about how the Christian viewpoint is changing [for the better] and progressing in it's thinking about what it means to be a Christian. It'll definitally hit on some subjs that'll help you personally and prepare you all the more for some of what up coming generations are going to be searching for in the Christian faith.
