WOW! I thought that the Salvation Army was an organisation of people of various religions, similar to the Red Cross, that helps people in trouble. I didnt realise that you are considered a denomination, like I am Eastern Orthodox. I was thinking I could join and still follow my religion, because the Salvation Army is a charitable organisation, not a church.

How long has Salvation Army been a separate religion?

Ever since it began. When our founder, William Booth was a young man, he was a street preacher. He went to the worst areas of Victorian London to preach. Many people were converted in this way. He guided them into their local churches, but tragically, the people were not welcomed. They were dirty, poor and smelly. So, Booth found a place for them to worship together. In this way, a new church was founded. Since he was working among the most disadvantaged of people, he also felt deeply that he needed to care for the physical needs of people as well as spiritual needs. Hence the development of the charity work that the Army is so famous for.

However none of this means you cannot join in. Many volunteers from every denomination and indeed none make this work possible. Salvation Army shops always need help for example. If you have an interest in helping, contact your local SA and see what needs doing. If you are based in a large town or city, there will be lots to do!

I was reading recently that the Salvation Army is second only to the U.N. in their giving in disaster relief.

They go about their relief work quietly but as Winston Churchill said on one occasion, "Where there is trouble, there is the Salvation Army".

That is on the relief sided of their spiritual mandate but their strongest mission was always outline by General Booth as seek to lead mankind to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. This is the church side of their work.

I believe it!! Jesus is certainly behind The Salvation Army.

Hi and welcome. The best way to find out the answers you are seeking is to have a look near the top of the main Cyber Corps page where there is a thread called "Online resouces - SA and others". That thread will have links to the info your after. In this thread you should find a link to the war college (similar to a bible college) in canada. They should also be able to help you out if you get in touch with them.

Also like all churches the salvation army can vary from congregation to congregation so maybe organise a time to sit down with the leader of the local corps and ask questions about their practices and their vision for the future. It really would be no use telling you all about the one I attend as your local corps could be very different.

God bless

HI Betty. Welcome to CF.

The best advice I can give is to try it and see. Give it a couple of months to get a good feel for things and you will soon know if you are comfortable there.

In the meantime, I hope you continue to post here in Cyber corps. You are most welcome.

In our corp more and more folks seem to be members but do not wear uniforms. Some complain that the prices of uniforms are to high. Others tell me that they dislike the uniforms, "Monkey Suits" I believe they call them.

My wife and I have debated joining the Army. At present, I mean we take part in about everything we want to or fill any position we are asked too. We have been told that there are not enough uniform people to fill some of the positions demanding uniforms.

What I would like to know is what positions demand uniforms? Who sets these demands? Why are uniforms demanded for these positions? Where in the by-laws it lays out the orders on wearing and using uniforms.

What happens when one member of the husband\wife term joins and elects to wear a uniform and the other joins but elects not to wear one.

I'm also told that some of the Salvation Army Churches are switching to Salvation Army Community Churches where uniforms are not required. I would like to see some discussion on these issue, please.

Ha.Nice to meet you all here:)

My faith approaches to Messianic Judaism and protestantism .Maybe now i am not in a denomination, but I am looking for a meeting suitable for me. I can partly understand the Diversification of Church. And, I am also a soldier of troops of YHWH.

confused. Our officers are Majors and most definitely wear the traditional uniform as do many older folks. I am assuming the person pondering membership mean becoming a soldier? Which is a little more than joining most churches as my kids both just took the training.
One could become an adherent which is what I would do as I don't want to promise to do anything until I die. except honour my marriage vows.
I went to one corps where you had to be a soldier to be involved in just about any ministry.

In my experience wearing uniform is becoming less common, particularly among young people. Positions are also more available to non-uniformed attenders than was previously the case. There are rules and regulations governing these decisions as there are for every SA activity.

It doesn't matter if one partner wears uniform and the other doesn't.

At my corps you have to be in uniform to be in the band and songsters. I think this is a pity because there are people who are very talented but they don't want to wear uniform for whatever reason. I wear pseudo uniform and get away with it. I'm in the band and songsters and even have a LO position!!

I think that anybody ought to be able to participate in anything regardless of whether they wear uniform.

What do others think?:D

There is no compunction for both husband and wife to wear uniform. I know of many couples where one is a soldier and one is not.

I'm afraid I'm a traditionalist when it comes to uniform and the sections though.

I don't think it's a good thing that our heritage as an 'Army' is being eroded. We are in real danger of throwing out the baby with the bath water.

I have nothing against modernising the uniform and accept that the days of the high level collar and bonnet are long gone (although I do think Abiel would look great in a bonnet:D), but to do away with the uniform or relax the situation to such an extent that it becomes meaningless, would be greatly to the detrement of us as an Army of God.

So, if I wanted to be in the Songsters again, and assuming I could find a Songster leader daft enough to have me, I would expect to have to wear uniform.
