Luke 10:25-37

25And lo, a certain lawyer stood up, trying him, and saying, `Teacher, what having done, life age-during shall I inherit?'

26And he said unto him, `In the law what hath been written? how dost thou read?'

27And he answering said, `Thou shalt love the Lord thy God out of all thy heart, and out of all thy soul, and out of all thy strength, and out of all thy understanding, and thy neighbour as thyself.'

28And he said to him, `Rightly thou didst answer; this do, and thou shalt live.'

29And he, willing to declare himself righteous, said unto Jesus, `And who is my neighbour?'

30and Jesus having taken up [the word], said, `A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and having stripped him and inflicted blows, they went away, leaving [him] half dead.

31`And by a coincidence a certain priest was going down in that way, and having seen him, he passed over on the opposite side;

32and in like manner also, a Levite, having been about the place, having come and seen, passed over on the opposite side.

33`But a certain Samaritan, journeying, came along him, and having seen him, he was moved with compassion,

34and having come near, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and having lifted him up on his own beast, he brought him to an inn, and was careful of him;

35and on the morrow, going forth, taking out two denaries, he gave to the innkeeper, and said to him, Be careful of him, and whatever thou mayest spend more, I, in my coming again, will give back to thee.

36`Who, then, of these three, seemeth to thee to have become neighbour of him who fell among the robbers?'

37and he said, `He who did the kindness with him,' then Jesus said to him, `Be going on, and thou be doing in like manner.'

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
And that would be number 2.

It's a tossup.

Romans 6:4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in the newness of life.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

O, the Great Solidarity in which Christ stands with us in death and resurrection through baptism, and the Great Exchange we find when all our sin and death is Christ's, and all his rightouesness and glory is our's.

Since you are insisting on only ONE verse, it would probably be John 3:16.

Pax!

That was my first thought too, but this one comes to mind also:
Mathew 27:46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, [c] lema sabachthani?" (which means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?").

Luke 6:26 'Be merciful, just as your father is merciful'

or

Judges 19:29
When he had entered his house, he took a knife, and grasping his concubine he cut her into twelve pieces, limb by limb, and sent her throughout all the territory of Israel

One represents my theology in a phrase. The other represents the reason I don't generally try and proof text everything I do from the bible...

We can and we are to judge ourselves. It just has not been given to us to judge others.
God may show us something, or people may tell on themselves. But we have no way to judge them.

1 Cor. 11:28a But let a man examine himself

Point taken, but I would appreciate building one another up on this thread, rather than splitting hairs.

Many thanks.

Can you say why? You don't have to, but it is an interesting division to look for.

2 Cor. 5:19 (KJV)
To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Lovely verse.

Which means it all comes down to one word" believeth" so the question is: what does it mean to believe. We know that "eth" at the end of a word means we are to continue in something.

Actually, it doesn't. 'eth' at the end of a word means it is third person singular.

Believeth is the standard third person singular, present tense, Middle English form, and is exactly equivalent to the word 'believes' today, and means exactly the same thing. It is not necessarily any more continuous than 'believes' is.

However, this is not a Bible verse ...

Oy! That is not one verse, that is a book and a half!

However, this is all good, so they can stay.

Interesting thread...
If I had to pick one verse to describe my life it would be:
[bible]Romans 7:15-20[/bible]

That is a very deep verse, and not the easiest in the world to understand. In fact, even after reading it three times I couldn't understand what the blessed Paul was rabbiting on about.

But I can see why it appeals.
