  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Your Lords prayer...

Status
Not open for further replies.
why do people call that it the lords prayer anyway?

we dont read that that is what he actually said in prayer, he prayed all night long, so, his personal prayers had to be longer than that.
and when he did pray for them before he went to heavon, it didnt sound like that.

those were simply guidlines or things to pray about.
we are not supposed to simply read that off and think weve prayed an effective prayer and be satisfied.

im not saying thats what your saying, im just talkin to myself.

True but I do not think it is wrong to say the Lord's prayer as it is. As long as you mean what you are saying. i am not saying that you are saying that.

But I do not know why it is called the Lord's prayer. it should be called the disciple's prayer since they are the ones who asked how they should pray.

i agree :)

i think people get to caught up in copying other peoples prayers to much.
i dont mean we shouldnt have the jabez prayer, and the so called "lords prayer" and the sinners prayer.
and all the psalms.
its just i think we need to learn that god honors MY prayer just as much, and if in line with the will of god, and have faith in my heart, then hell listen to my prayer and love it just as much.
we wont always have a prayer from the bible to quote, we need to understand that there is no formula to prayer.
theres no set way. and we need to learn to pray for ourselves.

though im all for praying the word of god, it cant go wrong.
one reason praying the word is good, and copying the bibles prayers is good, is that it helps our faith, becuase we know that we are praying the word, it boosts our faith.
but we need to have faith in ourselves as well.

Well my version of the Lord's prayer (or disciple's prayer) leaves out the part "forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us". to our church, that's OC (Jesus was born under law).

personally, id just modify it to say, "as u have forgiven me of all my sins, give me the grace to forgive others". something like that.

Here's the Catholic version:

(P = priest, A = all, C = congregation)

Lord's Prayer

P: Let us pray
with confidence to the Father
in the words our Savior gave us:
A: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass
against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Doxology

P: Deliver us, Lord, from every evil,
and grant us peace in our day.
In your mercy
keep us free from sin
and protect us from all anxiety
as we wait in joyful hope for the
coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
C: For the kingdom,
the power, and the glory
are yours, now and forever.

(I put the "doxology" section there too to show that the "for thine is the kingdom..." part isn't omitted entirely, it's just displaced a bit.)

What is 'your' version of the Lords Prayer?

The amazing thing is, I still remember this perfectly, although I haven't seen it in print since I was a kid, and I spent a number of years without thinking about it.

Our father, who art in Heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On Earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our tresspasses
As we forgive those who tresspass against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory.
Forever and ever.
Amen.

I like it because it covers everything a bit - and if I'm not reminded, I'll forget things.

I'm referring to Matthew 6:9-13

Has anyone paraphrased this, or can come up with their own version of it? By praying the word in a different way, it gets you to think about the word, which in turn helps you meditate and internalise what God is saying to us through the Bible.

i have used it as a guide when praying but I have not changed the words to the actual prayer while saying it.

Like I go down and recite one phrase of it and then say moe about it.

For example i will say

"Our Father. who art in Heaven " Then i will say " Thank you God for being a Father to me. i am not just a servant or a slave but I am your son.

then I will go on to the next part

I say "Hallowed be your name"

then I say " praise God. Glory to Go in the Highest. You are the best God. There is none like you."

and then to the next part and so on.

Is this kind of what you mean?

I think the Lords prayer is wonderful, I usually pray it the way it reads in the Bible. I also pray other things based on the same guidlines as the Lords Prayer shows. I think it's important for all christains to keep this prayer in their hearts, and praying it helps us remember it. You never know when you might need to teach someone who is just learning to follow Jesus how to pray. and this prayer is truely a blessing for those that don't know how to pray, or how to even start praying, for it teaches them what they need to know.
