  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Diocese of Phoenix has great weather if you are not a fan of the cold and don't mind blistering hot summers. We also have a great new Bishop, Bishop Olmsted. The cost of living here is quite reasonable.

Well currently I'm in San Francisco, but I know more about St. Louis. Archbishop Burke is currently our leader. St. Louis has a strong Catholic tradition. The Archdiocese is conservative especially now that Burke is here. I don't know much about the internal workings, but I've always been proud of my diocese.

The weather . . . well. The nice thing about the midwest is that we get all the seasons. I'm partial to fall which actually lasts pretty long in St. Louis. We get enough snow to be happy without to much trouble. It gets hot and HUMID in the summer.

I love St. Louis. It has tons of Catholic schools. I believe there are 23 high schools alone. The art museum, science center, history museum, and zoo are all free. It is a great place to raise a family.

If you don't mind me asking what school and what degree did you do your graduate studies in?

Abp Burke came from LaCrosse (I'm from Wisconsin). You all are lucky to have him!

My undergrad was a B.S. in Biology with a certificate in education (9-12); University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point.
My grad will be a B.A. in Theology; Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology.

Oh, and P2bC: Weather is a definite plus! I've always thought about Arizona.

The Diocese of Norwich (CT) is very traditional and orthodox to the faith. Most churches are old basilica-style with pipe organ music. You won't find many 'contemporary' Masses or youth rallies here. However!!! The people and government of CT as a whole (and much of New England) is very liberal including a good portion of Catholic laity.

There is much work to be done here and you would be a light in a dark place. The Diocese of Norwich has beautiful beaches and summers (see also, Mystic, CT ) as well as snowy winters good for skiing, beautiful Fall foliage and a really cool retreat center. Ender's Island We are 2 hours' drive from Boston and 3 hours from NYC. Cost of living is pretty high... double Phoenix and Florida... but less than some places in California.

While we're on the subject, I was wondering if dioceses have jobs available for 17-year old guys such as myself. I'd like to work for the Church, even if it's just menial labor with minimum wage.

Check the diocesan webpages. There's quite a bit of information on most of them - jobs of all types.

That's good news to hear the new bishop is well-liked. IIRC, the last bishop had an unfortunate ending to his post. We are likely moving to Phoenix in a few months and I am looking forward at the chance for WARM weather and I found a parish web-site located in Awahtukee that has a nursery.

Atlanta is great- there is a beautiful Traditional Latin Mass parish- there is perpetual Adoration all over the place including the Cathedral. Lots of priestly vocations. It's only two hours away from The Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament. The weather's pretty good- summer is hot & humid- but usually 5- 10 degrees cooler than the DC area. There's so much great stuff going on- I wish we lived closer to the city so I could be more active (though I know it is from God that we do not- so I must focus on my domestic duties).

Atlanta is a pretty cool city, too.

My Diocese (Portland, Maine) has a new Bishop that I am finding to be quite wonderful. The diocese as a whole is a mixed bag from Liberal in the south to Conservative in the North. The Cathedral in Portland is my home parish and has TLM. And contrary to popular opinion Maine is beautiful year-round and far more temperate than most would expect. This week was our first really cold week so far this winter and excluding the storm on it's way in we haven't had more than 5 inches of snow in Portland. We also aren't going to get the 2 feet everyone west of us received either...just a measly 6 inches.:)

The only downside of trying to get in the Diocese here is that we are a small diocese so jobs are scarce. But hey, take a little summer vacation to Maine, I'll introduce you at the chancery and you never know what might come of it!

I'm in the archdiocese of Cincinnati. I have no idea how to judge how orthodox it is, though. It's the only one I've ever been part of. I know we have a beautiful basilica downtown which seems to focus most of it's energy on the poor people of the inner city. They have programs for alcoholics for one thing. I know there's a tridentine mass offered over in Covington, KY. I think we have a pretty huge Catholic population here.

The weather here is sometimes hot, cold, dry and rainy. The only way to describe our weather is that it's unpredictable. We are in the middle of what looks (to me) like a blizzard, but 2 weeks ago a friend of mine was wearing shorts.

Maggie,

We got your old bishop (and your snow this time)! :p Bishop Cote seems to be doing good things for the Norwich Diocese. I agree that Maine is a beautiful spot. We've been to York Beach and Ogunquit in the summer months, though I'd rather not be any colder than I already am... even if it is just 10 degrees.

The Diocese of Grand Island Nebraska. Where we have scorching hot summers and brutally cold winters during it has been known to become more arid than even the Sahara Desert-(seriously). You would have in this diocese, for hundreds of miles, the largest non-shifting sand-dunes in the world. The great Sandhills of Nebraska.

Geez.. now I'm wondering what I'm doiung here :sigh:

It's a pretty liberal diocese comparatively speaking. But the people are incredibly friendly, extraordinarily charitble, the crime rate is practically non-existant, and the cost of living WAY below the national average. ;)

Oh Bishop Cote! He was the auxilary Bishop when I reverted but was transferred shortly after. He actually handled the Northern part of Maine which is heavy French Catholic, very traditional. I'm so glad he's doing well down there. I have some friends that converted shortly after me that moved down there due to a military transfer and they really love their parish.

I used to travel down there pretty consistently for work and it was always, exactly 10 degrees warmer down there. But I think in the last years you've had much more snow than we have.

Diocese of Orange...not really sure if you'd want to work here, although, imho, we are making wonderful strides in faith formation for teenagers and young adults.
The weather, well, it's southern california! The weather is more or less always changing, always different. The only thing you can know for sure is that August will be hot.

Carrie,

I am in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas (www.archkck.org) read about our new Archbishop (was coadjutor Archbishop) at www.theleaven.com . The weather, wacky this winter. Was 60 one day, 20 the next. Though it is a nice inbetween if you don't want too much of either pure cold winter or pure hot summer.

They were looking for a new pro-life coordinator, but may have it down to one or two people already interviewed. Don't know about other jobs there, but the Chancery office is a great place with great people who love serving their Lord and faith.
