  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That is an interesting translation.

I like to use this http://www.biblegateway.com/
to compare verses among the various translations.
And Blue Letter Bible has a concordance with it http://www.blueletterbible.org/
Here is an online Bible with footnotes http://online.recoveryversion.org/index2.asp
and an article about translating it http://www.recoveryversion.org/translation.html
There are both free and not free downloads at e-sword
http://www.e-sword.net/bibles.html
Here is a chart that shows the kinds of translations
http://www.zondervan.com/images/cms/Bibles/bible_transchrt_js.jpg
and a more in-depth comparison chart thingy

I think it is good to use a wide variety of translations.
I do not believe there is one "perfect" translation. I prefer the more literal translations like NASB, but sometimes they can be too literal and I need a little help understanding and then the Amplified is really helpful. Also it may be good to look up the greek word in the concordance to see what it can mean.

I personally refer them to one of two versions:

1. ESV (English Stanard Version) - it is accurate and literal but easy to read as well.
2. NASU (Updated New American Standard) - this is literal, word-for-word, yet can be a bit difficult to read in places.

However, I like to have both versions at the same time, for where one passage is difficult to understand in the NASU, the ESV generally provides an alternative translation that will help understand. And vice-versa. And you don't even have to be a Greek Scholar! Though that helps ;)
