You know you're an adventist if you:
*Believe you have to (and can) reach sinless perfection to be ready to go to heaven
*Believe that it is dangerous, or at least arrogant, to say, "I am saved."
*Believe eating meat or having a glass of wine with dinner is a sin, rather than a personal choice
*As a child, had to put your bike away Friday afternoon, leaving it there till Sunday morning.
*Turn off the TV just a minute or two before sundown on Friday, and turn it back on a couple of minutes after sundown, after checking your watch for the last half hour.
*Park your car 2 blocks from the theater to attend a movie, and pray nobody from church sees you there, and buy or rent the movie the minute it's out on DVD.
*Believe what you wear to church is important - must have pumps & pantihose.
*At some point you believed a gaudy brooch or pin was OK, but a simple cross on a necklace is sinful. Heaven forbid, pierced ears or the wearing of earrings.
*Have been excluded from SDA employment for wearing a simple wedding band
*You believe you should sit quietly in church with your hands folded in your lap, and wouldn't think of raising your hands in worship to the Lord. Next thing you know, you'll be rolling on the floor and talking in tongues!
*Used to think eating out after church was a sin, but now think it's probably OK
*You spend a lot more time reading EGW than the Bible.
*You often have difficulty recalling whether something comes from EGW's writings or the Bible.
*You believe you must be an SDA to be saved and go to heaven

grammyJoanne,

The Lord first speaks to us through foolishness. He gives us to believe foolish revelations, then he saves us from the foolishness by the rod of correction and gives us a better law, through better promises with a better hope in a greater high priest.

Let us never curse the religion of our fathers by which the Lord drew us to him in his foolishness.

Prov 22:15
15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. KJV

1 Cor 1:25
25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. KJV

Perhaps this is semantics, but I prefer "The Lord speaks to us despite our foolishness." This includes all of us.

Also, I'm in favor of shining a light on "the religion of our fathers." Religion has few uses. It's much more useful to enter into relationship with God and man.

Concerning old memories:

Eccl 11:9-10
9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.KJV

Prov 22:6
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.KJV

Eccl 12:1
12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;KJV

The son who went away, returned home with a new attitude toward his father. The son who stayed could not rejoice with his father.

Thank you, Joe, for your response and for the scriptures you listed. I am certain your message was meant to encourage and uplift. Bless you for that! Rest assured that I am sure of my eternal salvation, and that I am enjoying freedom in Jesus and all that it means. I have come to learn that it isn't about me, my behavior, or my ability to adhere to a list of do's and don'ts, but is rather about a personal, intimate relationship with my Lord and what He has already accomplished on my behalf. Any improvement in my behavior or any spiritual growth are a natural outgrowth of my love for Him.

I have no need nor any desire for "religion" in my life, since it is man-made and not of God, and could never return to the church or system of beliefs from my youth. It is incumbent on each of us to study God's Word for ourselves, free from any outside influences or human authors. Lets make a mutual pact to do just that, and see where the Holy Spirit leads.

Blessing!

The SDA denomination has over the past few years made a move toward using pastors who have other careers. Because these "bifurcational pastors" are viewed as "part time," they can be paid less and fewer benefits are extended. It helps conferences cut down on expenses.

Thanks, BFA. good move also. I never thought they paid enough for the extensive education and 24/7 access they required of the pastors.
