Hi Folks !
For us that are unequally yoked; a small measure of hope.
Spiritual Mentorship; friendship with a goal.
Unfortunately there are many of us that are unequally yoked. Whether due to spousal issues or due to being
single, a mentor relationship may be a way to become yoked with another believer . Our typical everyday
friendships and family relationships don't usually foster a relationship with Christ because usually those
relationships are not grounded in, or triangulated with Christ, and they don't have a structure that specifically
encourages one's faith. My problem is that fellowship fills the void to an extent but still lacks the yoke part
of the deal.
It is the structure in this mentorship that can provide the surrogate yoke .
One of the great benefits of a mentor/mentee relationship that three strand bond that we all need but may
be lacking.
I should also mention that the relationship should be pretty equal, not a Boss/Employee situation, but more an
accountability/discipleship/spiritual growth /prayer partner.
The mentoree can look to the mentor for guidance to spiritual maturity, and/or garner practical solutions to
the direction of the mentoree's specific ministry. The mentor can learn patience, empathy ,and
gain some valuable insight about the state of their own faith.
Another thing that comes to mind is that this type of arrangement can be fruitful and rewarding for both
parties because it offers challenges and rewards that casual friendships don't typically offer. The mentor
should have persmission to gently rebuke , if necessary, the mentoree, and/or to suggest avenues to growth
and maturity . The mentor is, ideally, a living example of spiritual maturity that the mentoree can trust and
can look to for guidance and encouragement , or simply enjoy the comfort of being connected to a reliable
faith partner.
The mentor must strive to be that example !! Ha ha , and you thought they had the easy end of the bargin.
Also just the simple practice of, the commitment to meeting every week , or at least every other week, on a
set schedule for prayer, fellowship and fun, can go a long way to keeping both parties focused on the
cultivation of their faith.
Folks this could be very benefical to your spiritual health.
I'd love to hear comments and suggestions from everyone - especially if you've been involved with a Christ
centered, spiritual mentoring program.
Thanks a bunch.
