  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Well maybe I'm just trying to hone my argumentative skills. ^_^

BTW: arguing with Indian men is equally futile, but this is mostly because socially, we tend to not be that bright. Apparently that went to the women.

So you beat people up when you're losing since you don't have the social grace not to? :D Just remember that I'm the mafia queen and have all sorts of people at my disposal!:p

Oh yes, about the spanking. I was never spanked as a kid. Today, when I'm supposed to be a mature young adult, my dad and I will often joke around by hitting each other. Sure, it's all a game to us, but we've actually injured each other on a few occasions (well, it's more me injuring him, since my dad is a weakling).

Clearly, the empirical evidence here shows that if you do not spank your kids, then they will grow up to be neanderthals who can only show affection by beating you up.

Today in psych, I learned that spanking is abusive and will lead to hostility/violence later in life.
did they say it was abusive? if so, then this is just the instructor's personal opinion.

if they said that it "will" lead to hostility/violence, then this is also just the instructor's personal opinion.

if they said that the principal of modelling and vicarious reinforcement (social learning theory) applies here as in other acts designed to inflict hurt on another person, and therefore seeing the adult negatively reinforced (i.e. hitting someone and facing no consequence for it) for hitting a child may lead to increased likelihood of the child themself showing violence toward other people, then yes, this has been demonstrated by a lot of research.

Well, I certainly never found this to be true, even back when I was working! There was much ridicule of all things 'christian' and everything was considered 'relative' and with no absolutes! Some were quite blatant and staff was not allowed to overtly witness to patients but there were definitely many patients that needed and received my prayers!
The ridicule and hostility toward Christianity by many psychologists and psychiatrists is common. However, there was a time when I was privileged to work on a christian 'unit' where a christian psychologist cared for the patients.
the conduct of individual practicing psychologists and psychiatrists aside, there is nothing in the science of psychology itself that i have found contradicting my Christian faith (there are some theories held by some researchers in psychology that are an exception, as there are in nearly all fields of science).

there are some things that are absolute and prove to be true in nearly all cases, and there are some things that vary significantly from individual to individual.

with regards to witnessing to patients or promoting the Christian faith, it is true that in most secular organisations this is not encouraged or supported (as it is not with most health professionals). it's generally true that the promoting of any personal opinions or beliefs is strongly discouraged. but i think if you listen to what the patient is telling you and show them that you care and show the love of Jesus in your work, that is the most effective way of witnessing (and there's nothing to say you can't have an encouraging Christian poster on your wall [at least, it's OK for doctors &c. so why not for psychologists?])

it is a blessing that you were able to work with some Christian practicing psychologists and other Christian mental health professionals, particularly if you felt that this was more compatible with your faith.

May I add one thing to your statement?

Oh, but there is something to be said in being able to take on your old man. When I was younger it was chess, and now it has de-evolved into arm wrestling.

Erin,

Back to the OP - the only thing I can say is to choose your battles carefully. My daughter (21 years) has had similar classes over the past 3 years of college. She refers to several of her science classes as evolution 101.;) As far as her psych/soc classes - they're very politically correct. She generally finds a way to include what the professor (or grad assistant) wants at the same time making her own perspective clear. Interestingly enough the most pc class she had was an English class. The grad assistant was very liberal in her politics and it spilled over into the books and movies she chose for the class to read and review. She wasn't real open to dissenting opinions either. For example - she had the class watch Farenheit 9/11 and review it. When some of the students presented documented facts disputing some of the conclusions in the movie the GA wasn't thrilled. Hannah's pretty much learned to laugh that stuff off.
