CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, technically, I've been writing for 6 years, and I've been working on the same book for about 2 1/2 years now, but it has gone through three MAJOR revisions, and only ever got to one first draft. I don't know if I really consider each different revision the same book, or not. It has the same basic themes, but with each revision the environment, characters, etc. are changed.

congratulations! that's a wonderful feeling.
i had one that lasted about 4 years. it was a touch and go process so it took a very long time. i finished though, went TA-DA! to anyone who would listen and then stuffed it in a file to never look at it again.You've never worked on a piece that long?

Good! My project originated at an assignment for a short story class. It was deadline time and the story was so not done, so I slapped an incredibly crappy ending on it and turned it in, promising myself I would get back to it. Six year and hundreds of thousands of words later....here I am! I don't think I could ever give up on this story...at least anytime soon. Tariel and Eliel and Kayhin wouldn't let me - especially not Tar.

The first draft I ever completed was called "The Twilight Reign" and was about 100-125,000 words, and roughly 370-odd pages. I went back to revise it, and instead dropped it off in an "old stories" file, and restarted. That same story has gone through several name changes, and very little of the material has gone unchanged. It's now "Earthensong: The Knights of the Sundered World Pentalogy." I've got a definite plot and name for the first book ("The Land of Silent Lights") but 2 and 3 are indefinite, 4 is "A Voice Like Silken Thunder" and 5, "The Nightling Dawn."
Sometimes I think I already have given up, and dropped my book. Until yesterday, I hadn't written in over a month. But then, I came on here, and saw this topic, and then I received the motivation to write again. Hurray!

Congratulations on finishing your novel! I know, that's an awesome feeling when you accomplish something like that. I remember how I felt when I finished my first one. It took me 4 years to write it, so I was pretty giddy when I finally finished it. I'm working on another one now, but it's nowhere near finished.
