We have all been taught that the "Dark Ages" were "dark" because the Western Roman Empire had toppled, there were huge migrations of barbarians on the move, and because of chaotic conditions, nobody wrote anything down. So there's a "gap" in the historical record, because we don't know what was happening, specifically---that period is "dark".
However, the discovery of previously unknown manuscripts, along with side studies from climate research, have revealed that back in the disastrous 6th century, there was a worldwide period of little to no sunlight for about eighteen months. This led to famine, plague, massive death, and toppling of entire infrastructures.
