• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

But if it helps any, I'll cut out using the Periodic Table as an example of incomplete science, as it's clear from your post that Mendeleev predicted elements would be added.

And it still goes on today.

Cheers AV.

Well, I do have a question:

How will you know when it's complete?

(And please, no rhetoric --- it's just a simple question.)

Technically, it could never be complete. There is always the possibility of new elements.

In terms of naturally occuring stable nuclei, it is complete. Plutonium (I think) is the heaviest naturally occuring element there is. The rest have been synthesised artificially.

Placeholders have been theorised for quite a long way, based on our knowledge of atomic orbital structure. Wiki lists up to element 168:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Period_8_element

I'm honestly not certain if there's an upper limit to atomic number; there's certainly no limit on the number of neutrons a nucleus can have (a neutron star can be thought of as a vast, neutron-dominated nucleus).

Apologies if this wasn't the sort of answer you wanted...

Interesting --- what if angels are made up of Element 250?

Well if you try to write a history of WWII and it isnt COMPLETE then it cant be valid. If you revise a part because of newly uncovered info that would be worse than if you changed your testimony in court. Makes all of it invalid.

Like that general who is supposed to have said "nuts" when the germans told him to surrender. I bet he didnt really say "nuts". I bet it was some other four letter word. What if you found out what he really said and it wasnt "nuts"? All of WWII history would have to be thrown out.

That is why ineerancy is so handy.

Nope --- your answer did just fine.

If there's not an infinite number of elements --- will you ever find the last one?

I've got a better question, if you want to go that route.

When did WW2 start, and who started it?

Possibly. Like I said, I don't know for certain if there's an upper limit or not in terms of proton number, which determines the element in question - but bear in mind, they contain charge, which complicates binding them in a nucleus - then again, neutrons help bind them together.

Neutron number is limitless, as they don't carry charge, however, if proton number stays the same, then you're not creating new elements, only isotopes (e.g U-235 and U-238).

Something I just found online if you're interested, a rather nice graph, a nuclide chart:

http://www.nndc.bnl.gov/chart/

This plots a point for every known combination of mass number (x-axis) and atomic number (y-axis), and colours the point depending on the lifetime of the element created. There does appear to be a tailing off so perhaps one day we can truly say there's a complete Periodic table, but maybe we just haven't filled in all the dots on our graph yet...

Again, apologies if this isn't what you're looking for....

Thank you. There's nothing wrong with a good debate. I'm sure you're really a nice guy AV, I just cannot comprehend how you believe some of the things you do.

YEC is the epitome of the destruction of the values in logic, reasoning, and our ability to observe, test and draw conclusions.
Ya --- we use YEC doctrine to deprogram those who have been taken in by science.

You can spot them a mile away:

  • They wear lab coats with pocket protectors.
  • They drink from a flask.
  • They heat their food over a Bunsen burner.
  • Their TVs are programmed only for the science channels.
  • They use technospeak, replete with neologisms and idioglossia.
  • They use only scientific calculators - (a rookie is one with a preprogrammed one).
  • They argue over which model of the atom is right --- Bohr or Rutherford.
The list is endless.

there is no YEC doctrine.

its just a bunch of psycho-babble published by people who have simply been told what to believe without logic, reasoning, proof, evidence, credentials, credibility or anything that goes hand-in-hand with science.

I could make a list, but I'm just not that childish.

YEC is psycho-babble. Ever read "of Pandas and People"? The same load of psychobabble being rammed down peoples' throat for hundreds of years without an ounce of proof or hint of evidence to such psychobabble.

YEC is brainwashing. You use the word 'deprogram' accurately.

the apple challenge is also psychobabble. It absolutely makes no point, and is devoid of anything resembling logic or reasoning. It is psycho-babble; the point of psychobabble is to INTENTIONALLY mislead and misinform people for the desire of some mental defect of inner need for validation, no matter where it comes from or how.

I'm sorry, but your claim has no support, and an invisible warrant.

ex nihlo only exists in your mind, and no one elses.

ex nihlo = psychobabble.
