Depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you talking with them trying to understand their beliefs then it may not be a waste of time. If you are trying to get them to accept what you're saying over what God says, then yes it is a waste of time. The Christians that I know have a saying: God said it, that settles it. We are rather close-minded about that. Then again if your mind is too open, your brain may end up falling out. Something to consider.
Not to sound facetious, I most likely have a better understand of the bible than most Christians. Well it was the lens I saw everything through for 17 or more years, and I don't like it when Christians assume that I know nothing about what they believe simply when I don't believe in it anymore.

Oh, sorry man I didn't mean that personally like you didn't understand our beliefs just as in general what might a person be accomplishing when talking with a Christian? I'm sure you do have a very thorough understanding of the Bible, there are many non-believers who grasp it very well. Good for you! I definitely was not assuming you didn't know anything about the beliefs, as I stated it was just a general idea of what might someone be trying to do when talking to a Christian.

That's ok, what saddens me is that I have had a whole world of beliefs to learn from blacked out by the westernised world of Christianity. Told that learning about other belief systems is a detestable thing in the eyes of Yahweh. But how does Yahweh expect me to choose him if I am not free to investigate and learn from other religions.

I think a choice is best made when a person can examine all the options there are, instead of just one.
