1) Yaz [ don't know if that particular hormonal contraceptive is available in the UK ] is not the only one involved with DVT problems

2) It's not just hormonal contraceptives have a bad record with DVTs

3) Airline flights can give you DVTs

4) Operations put you at risk from DVTs

Yes DVTs can lead to Pulmonary Emboli - I've had 2 and survived them both.

Stop the hysteria - the winners are always the Lawyers when they beg you to contact them about making a claim.

Let's see: Yaz = Carl Yastrzemski, famous Boston Red Sox player. Yaz also = birth control pills believed to sometimes be deadly. Boston Red Sox = team which famously went nearly 100 years without winning a World Series after trading away G.H. "Babe" Ruth. The logic is inescapable: it's the Curse of the Bambino!

I read recently red heads feel pain differently Study: Redheads Feel Pain Differently - The Frisky apparently takes more anesthesia to help them, so is a tricky thing, science is. God bless your friend and I hope they're ok.

I think too many people don't read the information leaflet in their medicine packets, there are risks to everything and it's important to know them. I don't contracept, but I have been advised by a haemotologist that I shouldn't take hormonal birth control because of a thrombophilia I have. I have come accross other people with thrombophilia who do use the pill...

I also hear of people falling pregnant on the pill while they were on antibiotics. Surely this is also in the information leaflet??

Pregnancy and obesity can also cause DVT.

Yaz is a brand known to be problematic. Years ago, drug companies were pushing Yaz hard on docs, so it was often prescribed. Then problems began to emerge that made Yaz more likely to cause complications than other hormone brands.

Anyway, let's not be alarmist. Right now, I could pull stats on death rates from any kind of drug or hormone. Just became some people out there have complications from one particular brand, it does not mean that there aren't people out there who have no complications and find their lives improved by using the drug.

I disagree: A life of celibacy and 100% abstinence does the trick for me!

Anyway, let's not be alarmist. Right now, I could pull stats on death rates from any kind of drug or hormone. Just became some people out there have complications from one particular brand, it does not mean that there aren't people out there who have no complications and find their lives improved by using the drug.

But I think the reason people get upset when things like this happen has a lot to do with the Pill's place in our society. Some people use it for medical reasons, some people use it solely as birth control. It's one thing to expect side effects and even occasional deaths as the result of medication for an illness, it's quite another when these side effects are for a situation where no illness was involved. When I take a medication I weigh up the pros and cons with my doctor. It seems to me that the potential cons far outweigh the pros for the pill as birth control (I would feel differently if I were using it as medication).

Good point about the people not using for medical reasons. I use it for medical reasons (not yaz, lol) and not pregnancy protection so I don't see the risks as any different than, say, the risks associated with my anti-depressant. Everything has pros and cons, and since I have zero risk factors and know what to look out for in terms of potential problems, I decided I'd give hormones a go... and they've made SUCH an impact on my well-being. I'd take hormones over another few rounds of surgery any day.

You're right, neither one is imperative.
Which is the point, perhaps.

Why take something that could increase a risk of death if you dont need to.

Contraception is a choice. Pain meds are also a choice depending on if you want to have pain or not...tolerance. etc

It is a choice. Do you want to heal or do you want to ail.
BC - do you want to fornicate or not...?
Do you follow a Churches teaching or not. A lot to think about.

Meantime, abstinence might be safer.
