I really think the Jeremiah verse is talkin' about them carving the trees into GODS. Maybe our modern tradition had pagan origins, but not one person today associates it with paganism. NO one places a tree thinking of "Saturnalia" or "worshipping idols".
It saddens me to see "well-meaning-believers" discouraging Christmas celebrations; I always respond the same: Christmas is our FOOT-IN-THE-DOOR. As long as there are Christmas trees, as long as there is spiced cider and hot chest-nuts, as long as there are joyful songs of "Away In A Manger" and "O Holy Night" and "Joy To The World", the world will see the face of Jesus. Even if only once a year, the hearts of all mankind turn to Him. In an age when so many seek to BANNISH all-things-Christ from public exposure, Christmas and holly and manger-scenes and "Suddenly a multitude of angels appeared saying, 'Behold, I bring you glad tidings of great joy; for undo you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior; and His name is Christ the Lord. ...Peace on earth, and good will towards men
with whom God is pleased!" --- these will,
we hope and PRAY, remain forever THORNS IN THEIR SIDES!
As long as there is Christmas, there will always, in the hearts of some, be the understanding that "JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!"
BTW, one of the funniest jokes I ever pulled, was "switching the Christmas tree". Everyone went home from a smallish artificial tree; but the next morning, it was at least 50% larger, REEKING of pine-smell, dropping needles, turning slowly on its motorized stand --- now scraping the ceiling and jutting out far into the room.
...
and nobody noticed that it wasn't the ARTIFICIAL TREE!!!!! That was SO much fun...
