Hi all. I'm new to Christian Forums. I want to be honest with everyone, so I have to say that I was raised in a Welsh Baptist chapel, but now I'm borderline agnostic/atheist at best. I veer wildly between the desire to believe and the general despair of not finding anything proof-worthy enough to personally convince me. Also, there's all the nasty stuff in the Bible that I don't remember ever being mentioned in chapel, but it's definitely there. Also I am drunk at the moment, so in general, I'm sorry for that because I genuinely don't want to upset anyone.

I used to do my best bible discussions while drunk. I think it was John Climacus that once wrote how he found tears while praying to come easier after drinking wine.

I promise you, our Lord and Savior made a finer vintage than you are drinking. I also promise you that Jesus is not the sum of those that judge others in His Loving Name. He exalts Mercy and Compassion, while this world demands quid pro quo.

Welcome to the forum. What fills your cup as you write this?

As I've aged, I can't enjoy imbibing as deeply as I used to be able to. HTacianas, are you a fellow witness of Jesus Christ that can't keep quiet about the gospel if a bit of joy from drink washes over you?

Welcome to the forums, brother. I do not drink, so I can not help you, but remember, most of the nasty stuff in the Bible only applied to Israel in the OT. The New Testament is all about grace and forgiveness.

That's a good way to put it. But I gave up drinking about five years ago.

@Kryten17 , you know what is proof of God? The fact that you experienced a calling to this Christian forum. That is God trying to bring you closer to Him, and trying to bring you Christian friends that are supportive and can help you in this journey called life.

How old are you man? I am 24, and it took me until age 24 to start getting into the Bible more. Now, I only read a few verses to make devotionals, but eventually, I will read more verses.

You probably heard the nasty stuff.

I don't find solid proof of God in the Bible either.

But I stayed with Christianity because the teachings of Jesus helped enhance/un-suppress my supernatural abilities and helped stop aging. At least something in there works.

I do like your honesty. As to the nasty stuff in the bible, some of that is misunderstood. The flood for instance, saved the human race as many think that the giant Nephilim were half angel and half human. Had God not flooded the earth to keep the human race pure, then Jesus could not have saved anyone. Adam was redeemed, the defiant angels (demons) were not. In other words, God has good reasons for some of the nasty stuff.
As to your proof, God can certainly send that to you. However, it will not be scientific but it will consist of a faith that clearly lets you know that Jesus is real and died for your sins. Such an encounter with God is what you need. What tries to stop it is the power of darkness. So don't give up seeking and I pray that the darkness, the blinders and hindrances to knowing God are removed and that God shows you Himself in an undeniable way.

@Kryten17 Here is a devotional that I made about seeing God's hand in everything. You are from the UK/Wales, as your profile stated? Have you ever flown, driven or been to Ireland (I have not)? Ireland has beautiful landscapes, and yes, erosion made the landscapes. But God our Creator fine-tuned the universe in such a way that water would exist on Earth, that massive stars would live, and then explode as supernovas. All those heavy elements make up the Earth.

Faith and Science Devotional below.

Date
April 11, 2024 | Faith & Science
Verse
Psalm 111:2 (ESV): Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.
Explanation
Psalm 111:2 expresses wonder at God's great works or deeds, which are studied by all who delight in them. Scientists engage with these works through their research and discovery. Faith and science complement each other, as both acknowledge God's presence and power in the natural world. Scientific inquiry is driven by a belief in a deeper meaning to the universe and a recognition of God's involvement. The verse affirms that studying God's works deepens our appreciation for and connection to the LORD.
Life Anecdote
Both science and faith can go hand-in-hand. An astronomer can look through his/her telescope and see stars that have been around for millions of years. The vast scale of the universe shows how small we are in size compared to God’s Creation. A Catholic Christian named Gregor Mendel discovered genetics in the mid-1800s when he analyzed pea plant alleles (genes). Louis Pasteur, the French man who we can thank for making beverages safer by bringing the liquid to 60°C (145°F) whenever we buy milk and juice at the grocery store, was also a Christian. Pasteur had a Catholic background with humanitarian beliefs to serve the greater good, though he was not deep into his faith.

Georges Lemâitre, a Belgian Catholic priest and scientist, is considered the father of the Big Bang theory, along with Hubble and Alexander Friedmann*. In the 1920s, along with Edwin Hubble and Friedmann, he proposed that the universe began as a singularity – an infinitesimally small and dense point of pure energy – that expanded and gave birth to the universe as we know it. Lemaitre's theory was influenced by his religious beliefs and his understanding of Einstein's theory of general relativity.

*Friedmann was baptized into the Russian Orthodox Church as an infant, and lived much of his life in Saint Petersburg.

There are rare instances where bread at Catholic churches turn into physical flesh and blood, known as a Eucharistic miracle. But for most times, the bread does not turn into physical flesh or blood from our perspective, but instead transforms into flesh and blood invisibly, known as transubstantiation. I did not believe in transubstantiation, until learning about Eucharistic miracles in late 2021 or early 2022.

Eucharistic miracles have been studied by scientists, and in all of the confirmed miracles, the blood was type AB. In other Eucharistic miracles, the Catholic church has dismissed some, as red fungus sometimes grows on old bread. So, rigorous scientific testing is used to confirm these miracles.

Creation or happen chance?

God says the evidence of Him is in nature .... man says the same thing and everything "just happened" over billions of years, theory.

When one looks at the very extreme complexity of the universe and everything in it that makes life possible here on planet earth ... the the idea of "happen chance" the odds of that is ridiculous.

Yes there is "nasty" stuff in the Bible .... God is and has been very honest about the sinful condition of mankind throughout the ages and into the future. However, as wretched are the things of days past .... the same things continue on today ... nothing new under the sun.

Here's an article you might read ...

The Mathematical Impossibility Of Evolution

PS .... Hope you escape a hangover. ;o)

You only have to look at the book of life which is the DNA.

I find that tears while doing anything come easier after drinking wine! I think I know what you mean though. I haven't heard of John Climacus so I will have to look him up. Thank you for your reply.

Proof is the enemy of Faith. Welcome to the forum. I will pray for you to not stray too far from the Glorious Lord Jesus.
The thing I have a problem with is the idea that it's bad to think critically about all the information available to you at that time, and to not doubt anything you're told. I do remember hearing about the importance of Faith over what a person might consider reason (personally to them) in chapel (e.g. doubting Thomas), but I'm afraid it won't (currently) convince me to accept something as fact, however much I would want to. Thank you for taking the time to reply to me, and I really hope I haven't offended you with my response.

I learned the hard way to never drunk post! But that was a couple of decades ago.

I'd just moved from the mainframe to a PC and got carried away...

This reply exemplifies what does still draw me to Christianity (basically all the Jesus bits, because in my opinion He was just WOW).

I agree that the horrible stuff happened in the Old Testament (as far as I remember), but the Old Testament is still part of the Christian Bible. I'm afraid that confuses my simple mind!

With no Christ, there is no Christianity. Acts 11:26
