  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Congratulations! You've broken into the profession early! What is your article about?

We have some published authors here--I hope they see your note. At least three of us have books released this year. And we have plenty of pre-published writers who dedicate serious time to their craft. Some have links to their sites in their profiles. (Click on their names, and look in the drop-down list for "view profile.")

Welcome to the forum, Writer!

oncewaslost, NEVER let rejection scare you. John Grisham received 70 something rejections before a small nobody'd-ever-heard-of-em outfit agreed to pub 'A Time To Kill'. 'The Firm' got about 20. I receive a rejection for every acceptance on magazine articles and sometimes will get several in a row before something's accepted (and I get far fewer than most and I have a good track record in the industry).

This is typical of most forms of creative expression. You are expressing what you believe important, but others want to twist it a little to conform to their ideas. Those trying to make money off this weird battle of expression want something that predictably appeals and doesn't offend.

I heard a successful author speak recently; he said that he spent 20 years writing what he wanted to write, barely published. In rethinking his plan, he decided to write what sells, so he researched the formulas. Giving in to methods he preferred not to, he immediately had publishing offers and has continued successfully since.

I've heard that Dr. Suess' first book had about 30 rejection letters. (Not fact-checked.)

I've been published in mags. I've gotten some really nice rejection letters, LOL! The kind I hate the most are those that say, "too controversial for our publication".

There's not many who want to hear the truth today. So when it came to books I decided that I would go self-publishing route. Haven't decided which printer to use yet.

An acquaintance of mine offered to read a book I had written. She worked at UCF in FL. I knew she was a little too politically correct but her response was, "It's a great book for the underground." Had to scratch my head on that one. Basically what she was saying is that it was only a book that true Christians would bother to read and since most of the Churches in Orlando had gone New Age, she knew they wouldn't accept it.

Bummer...but no, it's great! If I am trying to reach people who refuse to get into the new doctrines out there then I want to be underground. Only problem is that if I want a traditional publisher to pick it up, my chances are slim. They publish what the public wants and too much of the public right now wants to hear what their itching ears want to hear.

So, I will self-publish.

I've got quite a fat file of rejections, some dating back years but I'm still trying to get my two novels published. There are so many tales of famous novels being turned down umpteen times. I live in hope!

Couldn't get my text book published either so published that myself with great success! As for my book on flag worship, I'm not even trying a publisher - it's just so easy to do it yourself now and sell it on Amazon or through a personal website.

Answer - either way, don't - ever - give up!!!

Makes you think, doesn't it! As I said previously, one of my novels I wrote in 1978 and have sent it to many people. Imagine my chagrine when Stephen King came out with a novel of a very similar story-line which was then made into a film. But how would I ever prove it!

oncewaslost, you do web design---do you have a site for your work?

actually, i haven't done webdesign in quite some time. ever since i lost my domain i haven't thought to pick it up again. oh well.

i don't think that i could handle someone rejecting my work and then using it to publish something of their own. i might get a little ticked.

I certainly was ticked all right! The book/film (I've just remembered) was 'Misery' !

BTW you might be amused to know that your signature of John 15:13 is the very line of scripture of that provided the thread for my first novel!!!

I wonder if one of the publishers you sent it to liked it, but knew it would sell better under a known name, so asked him to write something along those lines. We hate to think that goes on, but how else would one explain movies that come out in pairs? (eg., Bug's Life/Antz.)

Some years ago I had a friend who was a publisher of some experience and he said he had been offered retainers from well known authors or their agents to spot original works by unpublished writers and send them on after rejecting them. He wouldn't do it but it's hard not to believe that others with less priniciples might actually accept.
