  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have been struggling over this dilemma lately, I have an old NASB that I did tons of writing in, especially when I was going to seminary...ended up losing if for a year and got it back by accident...long story. I always wanted to buy a binder bible...rings for adding pages as notes grow...another thing that I did, was use the blank pages at front and back to write one liner quotes that I heard along with speaker's name and date...very interesting as the years have passed. New dilemma...electronic Bible on my PDA..just can't decide whether I like this or not...anyone else working with portable electronic versions...any thots. G.

I personally do not write in my Bible (except I will fill in the family tree part, and the births, deaths, and weddings, etc--I won't write in it anywhere else). It just doesn't do anything for me, but then again, it helps some people a lot. If that is something you like to do, but are a bit scared to write something "wrong", maybe try using a pencil. You can always go back over it in ink in the future if you are satisfied with what was written? Just a suggestion.

I dont write in my Bible, i normally write on the back of the bulletin thats handed out and keep them so i can refer back if need to be. I do have an older bible that I tend to underline things, but not in my new bible, because I paid a little more for it (its a study bible)
Can I give you a little quote?
A Bible thats falling apart, probably belongs to someone who isn't

I have a brand new Cambridge wide-margin (KJV of course) Bible that was given to me as a gift. I know the Bible cost over $100 (I wish they hadn't spent that much on it, but they did). So, I am being very careful how I handle it, etc. hoping for it to last a long time for me.

Anyway, my question is: do any of you have any "systems" of writing your notes in your Bibles? I'm always afraid of writing something down and then a few months later realizing that I misunderstood what was being said, or when the preacher preached on that verse, he really was "stretching..."

Anybody have any thoughts?

I make very few notes in the margins. I write a little history of the book on the title page of each book and then I make my own topical reference in the back. I tend to bracket verses to highlight them. The only place I use highlighter is to highlight the Romans Road. I make a note at the top of each Roman Road page to guide me to the next verse in the string of passages. If I do make notes in the margin (my margins are small because I use a parallel Bible) I make as short of notes as I can. For pastoral notes, I carry a small notebook to church where I take the majority of my notes.

Sounds disorganized, but it's not that bad. :)

God bless,
Dave

In reading this, it was interesting. I too had been taught to treat your Bible with respect, as a child I wrote in pencil highlighting a verse and felt crummy afterwards. But now I recently had seen a friend of mines Bible. He carries a ruler to point to notes he has written on each page about each verse. WOW!

I have been wanting to develop a system to get started. Highlighting corresponding verses. Such as Dave spoke of with Romans Road. Anyone have any ideas of a system of "highlights" by topic?

The Bible is the only book I write notes in :)

I don't write directly on the pages, just on notes which I tape to a page. Unless someone points out a cross reference, these verses I write down directly.

I only underline those verses that point to His First and His Second Coming.

Although I often take notes during sermons, lessons, and other oral presentations, very few of such notes go directly into the Bible I carry with me. Instead, most notes are on notepaper, pocket Day-Timer pages or bulletins. Later, I go through the notes, look up scriptures and other authorities, and summarize the best of the notes into the margins or other blank spaces of my Bible. I also add notes from research or thoughts from prayer and meditation.

When I am in a hurry (taking down a flurry of notes, for example), my writing tends to be larger and less neat than what I prefer to be in my Bible. By adding the notes later, I am able to transcribe only the best or most meaningful--and in a smaller and neater size. Plus, I can use various colors of pen and pencil to keep one note from running into the next.

I have special highlighters that dont bleed though, they are like crayons, yellow, pink, red, blue, it is very pretty and dosnt go through to the next page, i dont have to worry about letting it dry.
For writting I keep a specific journel that i write down what i want to remember and write down where it is found. that way i can just open that up.

I write in my bible all the time. God gave us this book, it is our instructions for life. If something jumps out at me, which happens alot. I highlight it. If I am studing something I will write comments in the margins. I even write the thought for the day from my daily bread if it is something that pops, you know where you say oh yea.......

I have done this to all my bibles. I have one that neighbors gave me after our son died. I used it till the binding broke. I still use it. it has not foot notes. but there is something really special about this bible.

There is nothing wrong with writhing in it. Collegg kidds mark school books. This one is for your life......

I write notes in the margin, underline/bracket and occasionally highlight. It really helps me learn to have notes and I also see a lot of value in having my notes and thoughts written down... if my daughter or wife were ever to inherit my Bible.
