  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am FULL of ideas for writing! If you want to come up with a good idea here's what I suggest. Start with places. What world is it? What are the countries/empires like? Good or evil? Any points of interests? I'm going to make two up right now, I'm just going to type whatever and that will be the name of the two countries. The Vaxla and the Yurshu are two of many kingdoms in a world. Good or evil? They are both good, but the Vaxla are being forced into an alliance with some evil kingdoms. How are they related? Well, the Vaxla and Yurshu kingdoms are ruled by brothers, so they are obligated to help each other. Just with those few questions you have a plot and I discovered characters - two brother kings Also I could create characters for the evil kingdoms that are trying to take the Vaxla.

Once you have places and a few characters, think of some events. Is there anything else going on at the same time that you could also write about? At the same time, maybe a priceless artifact was stolen in the Yurshu kingdom. We'll call it the Ball of Rejuvination. What does it do? It gives the people life. Now they must quickly find the Ball or they will die out in a matter of years, but they also have to help the Vaxla out.

Now if you don't want to do a story with such a large scale, simply start with that and then zero on a few characters. Let's create a Vaxla family. What do they think of the current situation? They are against the alliance with the other kingdoms. How do they show it? They know they will be in big trouble if they protest as the other kingdoms are stronger and they don't know what to do. One thinks that if they find the Ball and save the Yurshus, the Yurshus will come help them. What would happen if the character carried out his plan? Of course, leaving the family would result in it being harder for them to survive, and so on.

I made up all of that on the spot, so you can too. Maybe you can get a friend to ask questions like I asked questions above. As he or she asks the questions, you say responses as quickly as you can. Tell him or her to start with broad things and then get more specific later. A fake interview would be a good way to come up with a few things. :)

The simple writing exercise is.....

Imagine two people walk out of a building.

Now take a look at that image in your head, look but don't think.

What do these two people look like?
How are they related, if at all?
What does the building look like?
Why did they come to building?
Were they successful?

Or you can start with a character, interview that character and then ask, "So now what?"
