  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Just wondering if anyone here ever checks out the origins theology board over at the "christian only" section. The creationist-only board makes me really sad for public education and Americans in general.

Check out the "YEC or OEC" thread in particular. The people there think Kent Hovind is an awesome guy with devastating arguments against evolution. Here is a snippet:

"After reading up on the indoctrination of evolution (as well as the sex ed thing) I've decided not to enroll my children in public school. I'm caught between homeschooling and private Christian schooling though I'd have to be careful. Even the church nowadays is compromising and letting in evolution and millions of years."

I can only say, doh!!!

I wonder why they are too afraid to visit the mixed forum with their ideas?

If we were allowed in their forum, Non-Christians and TEs would fill it to the brim. Talk about a Sh*t- Storm

I've lurked in their forum. Believe me, I don't wonder at all...

You can only say, "DOH!" because you lack communicative skills. Obviously, you attended a public school....

So when our financial advisor lent me some Hovind tapes espousing YEC, I went into it with an open mind, but did not think I would be convinced. I was wrong. It makes me sick that so much knowledge is being hidden from school children because it weakens faith in evolution.

Hahahaha...the only thing you can extrapolate from "doh" is that I watch the Simpsons or live with someone who does. And not only did I attend a public school, but I even went to a fairly liberal university (NYU!)

That's probably where I was given crazy ideas about established scientific doctrines and what a transparent quack Dr. Dino is. I mus say, you are quickly becomming my favorite creationist around this board. dad is no fun cause he tries to stick to his arguments, no matter how hillarious they may be. But you have no problem inferring an inability by your opponent to love, spell, communicate, or think when presented with facts. Good stuff.

I have been there before. For me, it is crushingly depressing. So much stupidity in such a small place. Will no one think of the children? (sigh)

That section of CF is just indicative of a larger set of problems. There is an incredible downward in education/science, and the effects are apparent here.
The statements made Kent Hokum ensnare the same undereducated people that don't understand what a "theory" is in scientific parlance.

I get the same feelings when I stumble upon creation/evolution discussions in non-related forums (ie, I visit a Disney forum often, and lurk on a relationship building forum). It's a lot of, "did you know that evolution was disproved?!?" "REALLY, WOW!" and so on.

Someone once told me that Kent Hovind was a persuasive christian, and that I should listen to all his seminars. Supposedly if I did this I would "see the light and convert immediately." Not one to back down from such a challenge when I have time, I downloaded his entire seminar set on mp3 (from his site, so it was legal!) and listened.

I have never laughed so much at a sound file that wasn't supposed to be comedy. I then did a bit of research into the guy... Fake (or at least unaccredited and certainly undeserved) degrees to make him sound cleverer than he is, and the biggest load of pseudo-science I've ever encountered in one place!

What a guy (and I don't mean that in the Ace Rimmer sense of the phrase, for anyone who likes Red Dwarf out there)

Grengor: just about every one of his arguments has been refuted over and over again, so to be honest I'd rather juts point you in the direction of Talk Origins and say "pick anything" rather than spend any more of my time trying to convince people that Hovind doesn't know what he's talking about. I just thought I'd bring up the credentials thing because to me presenting yourself as something you are not is "giving false witness," so I thought it was a rather interesting point given that he's supposed to be a christian.

There was a great post in there about why anyone would want to believe in evolution as it's too complicated, Creationism is better because it's easier to understand.

That's amazing.

They should start teaching the Theory of Gravity Faeries to kids, instead the current theory, which is full of all those big numbers and stuff.

I think the YEC section is funny. I like watching them shift around uneasily and try to make up lies as more evidence in favor of old earth and evolution comes to light. All of this is happening while YEC has yet to provide a single piece of scientific evidence to support their theories.

Oh I know personally that almost, if not all of his claims have been thuroughly refuted over, and over, and over again, I just posted my opinion on the continuous use of his credentials, but now that I think about it, my post does seem unnessecary, for multiple reasons.

So does mine to be honest (and this one even more so), but hey, conversation is often unecessary.

I'm told that us scientists are supposed to work on our social skills...

I see a lot of harping on Kent Hovind's fake/worthless degrees, but now that that's out of the way, why not continue to go after his ideas? I know that is done often, but I've been seeing too much about his credentials lately.

Considering his big money offer has little to do with evolution, what science actually says, and is in general, apologetics, I think it is safe to say that his ideas are rather flawed.

What do you think is his best piece of 'evidence' for creation? The shark he keeps calling a dinosaur or the moon dust argument that even his fellow creationists wont use any more because there is so much evidence that it is a poor argument?
