I think it's because people are afraid of anything that is different from them because it serves as a reminder of how boring they really are.

Because some people have it in their heads that, by disowning their child, their child will stop being gay and come back, similar to what some parents do with children who are on drugs. At least, that's how my fundie sister put it.

No, but I certainly wouldn't encourage homosexual behavior. In fact, I'd discourage it. And it they chose to practice homosexual behavior, I don't know what I'd do but I'd definitely talk to my pastor about it.
