Would you consider joining a branch of the military? (why or why not?)

I just wanted to get an idea of some of the reasons that people decide to join...

Okay here are some personal reasons.

I spent the past six years working for a telecommunications company that mostly went belly up after lay-offs off over 1000 employees. That was the third company I worked for that went belly up here in California.

I did relocate to take another job at the beginning of this year but it was along side some relatives and I found out that they are simply… nuts! I found myself in the middle of a family blood feud so I got the heck out of there and returned to my home town with my next move in mind.


So leading my reasons are job security and relocation far far away from da relatives. Luckily I’m still single and with no kids, so moving around or shipboard is not a problem.

I’m also a part-time collage student so the college courses provided by the military during active duty are appealing for me. I love working with computers and electrical systems so continued training and job experience is something I am anticipating.

For those that may say that I may be required to participate in fighting a war, I say that I’m aware of this and have no reservations concerning doing so.


Oh, and Hopeful, there are a lot of people serving in the military under a green card. After six months to a year they are usually granted citizenship.

And cenimo, I’m perplexed by your perplexity, hehe.

I almost joined the army reserves with my boyfriend last week...we were scheduled to do our physicals, but I decided I didn't want to be away from my family, friends, and my boyfriend for that long. The whole experience was really emotional, and I have so much respect for the men and women who do serve this country. (I am thinking of even sending the recruiter a thank you note for not only serving, but for giving us so information about the armed forces so we can appreciate it anymore, bad or good idea??)

I will never willingly join any branch of the military. If there were a draft and I were eligible, I would apply for CO status, as I find killing other human beings abominable. If I were not given CO status, I would not comply with the draft. I would consider myself to have been kidnapped if the Armed Forces found me and tried to make me do what they wanted, and would act accordingly, even if it meant my death or long-term imprisonment.

I will not kill, I will not learn to do so, and I will not go into any position in which I may very well have to. So there.

I joined the Marine Corps ( many many ago )...... The reasons I joined besides admiring the Corps all My life - but I felt a desire to give back to My country - to protect the freedom fought for... When a person joins the Military - they do not join with preconceived ideas of going to kill others.. if the President calls on the Military - then they do whattever is needed... Every man and woman serving deserves our thanks and gratitude for serving............

[My Higher Self]

I joined because as an American I enjoy the lifestyle that I can live here. Given its not a perfect society and I don't feel we have all the freedoms we should have, but I think its a good system, and I like the way it works for the most part. Others have laid their lives on the line for this type of lifestyle and I would feel selfish living here on someone elses blood, sweat, tears, and Sacrifice. I serve, so that my family can continue to enjoy the life we have here. That way it doesn't weigh on my conscience that I am enjoying all the benefits while some one else pays the price.

Oh I know, I look back and laugh at times. But I can list 1000 good reasons, each with a name, of a friend, of a family member or of a loved one…

USAF 1968-1972

I joined because I was NEXT! (1A, second physical).

Would I have joined if not for the draft? Not at 18, but eventually I think.

I am thankful that I did serve and give something back for the benifits of living in a free country.

Freedom is purchased, never given, the price is the highest possible price. Living free is easy, paying it's price is worthy of our highest possible honor. Jesus said. "No greater love has a man that He would lay down His life for another"

If you live free, you have been loved by many you will never know.
