Would lying be considered a sin?

I am curious to know the general consensus on whether to tell a lie, or perhaps make an additonal statement to a known fact, without substance, to protect oneself from an adverse reaction, would this contravene our relationship with God. Could this be considered a sin, or is it something that could be used as justification for saying something that is totally inaccurate?

I don't believe in Sin, so that part of the question has no relevance to me.

You know in your heart what is sin (wrongdoing for those who are offended by the term sin). There is a difference between disgression and bearing false witness.

Depends on the situation - lying in some cases ain't a bad thing and in others, well - the truth should be told so without knowing your situation, I can't give you my opinion. Sorry hon!

Lying is sin. The Lord declared it on Mount Sinai. Telling something apart from truth is lie. Saying that someone is beautiful when it could be questioned is not lying if you see past skin.

that's why i said it depends on the situation -

if a wife beater were to come to my door looking for his wife that I was hiding, do you think i'm gonna tell him the truth that she's hiding out at my house? no way - i'd be lying my rear end off.........

depends on the situation - it's not a black or white issue - there are shades of gray here......but that's just my opinion.

The story of Rahab in the Bible is a good example of what Nikki is talking about ...

She had to lie to protect the spies from Israel who were hiding on the roof ... Rahab had been a prostitute but wanted to live a new life. It turned into a beautiful love story because afterwards Rahab and the spy fell in love and got married and as you can read in the NT, one of Rahab's descendants was Jesus Christ according to the geneology!

A great verse to share! It is so wonderful that we have a living God with a living word to guide us through those difficult situations where going by the letter of the law just does not fit what God wants us to do at that time. I am sure those who had to lie to the Nazi's to protect those hidden in their homes will get their just reward in heaven! For my part, I'd give them my reward!

I like to "twist". For instance.. I tried to trick this guy that his friend and I were going out as a joke, so I said to the guy "Say you like me, so I can say you said it. Of course I know it's not true, but I can say you said it."
Or something more serious..
I was protecting a friend when her dad wanted to know where she was.. This guy said the words "She was last at this place.." So I could say "Last I heard she was at this place.." I heard it! lol. There was a just cause that I won't go into detail about before someone says "How could you do that?" lol.

And it would be nice if in the REAL WORLD things were that cut and dry now wouldn't it be?
