Would Joel Osteen be considered charismatic?

What is the name of what he teaches? I have heard of Word of Faith, but I am not sure if he is that? I had been turned off of Word of Faith before but maybe that was just a bad church. The people at that church judged everyone on how they dressed and their job and were unfriendly. The pastor eventually ran off with a woman in the congregation leaving his wife and kids and starting another ministry and having more kids. Like I said, maybe it was that church.

I'm really looking for a lower-key charismatic church. Not one into needing to put on a show and forcing gifts or having a personality cult going on. I believe in the full gospel though now.

He's fulfilling what he's called to do.

Just find a church/pastor you can agree with, submit to and grow.

Don't be like those who sit on the fence and just criticize and judge. In life you need to take sides and just run with the light that God has given you.

I guess the He's-a-heretic-becos-he-doesn't-preach-what-I-believe spirit still possesses many people in this forum.

What amazes me is an attitude that says that because someone preaches something I don't believe they are automatically wrong.

Sometimes when I listen to a preacher who believes different from me, I am wrong and I can learn something!

Tuff Bunny, I've been to a few VERY low-key charismatic Churches over here in England! They're a wonderful balance between liturgy, traditional classical church music, and an openness to whatever the Spirit wants to do along with more contemporary styles. There is no hype and there is a social transformation aspect too. It's funny though: the one I currently attend is generally quiet and contemplative, but I heard some of its leadership describing a revival that occurred many years ago, and you had these reserved, poshly-spoken Englishmen and Englishwomen admitting to expressing themselves as if they were in a loud, black, pentecostal Church! The Spirit moved powerful and made them fall more deeply in love with Jesus (and they weren't afraid to shout about it...)

It's interesting to see that people from all backgrounds and all personality types - from the reserved and introspective to the opposite - can 'come out of themselves' and honour God with free, expressive praise, just as David did, when the Spirit moves.

Have you visited?

There are people here who can find no right with him and others find no wrong. The best thing you can do is see and think for yourself.

I would trust NO ONE who has never sat personally under his ministry for a number of times to give anything other than a pro or con opiom not based on fact, but on personal bias.

It is also wrong to just judge someone on a 30 min. program once a week - there is so much more going on at that church. Anyone who can keep the name of Jesus in front of that many people has a calling, it may be Christianity-lite, but there will be thousands lined up behind him as bringing them into the Kingdom.

All I can say - he is doing far more than I am for the Kingdom of God - so how could I possibly jusge him.

I was tired when I wrote my original post. I love Joel Osteen! and I am looking for a church that has balanced teachings like that! In the past, I didn't understand it and was in a bad church I see now, because I am starting to understand what he is talking about. I got so many thoughts in my head. I am sorry I came across unclear!

I am an introvert by nature and I have seen a forced hype type go on in churches but I love to sing too, from the heart, so what can I say...nothing against it...

How do you know it is fake? Do you know how happy he is?

True happiness comes from being focused on Christ alone. Based on what I've heard from him he's not focused on Christ. In fact he seems to believe that Jesus Christ is not the only way to salvation. So, assuming that's what he really believes how can he be focused on Christ and if he's not focused on Christ how can he truly be happy?

What a dreadful insult to the man, Jim!

I repeat, “Joel Osteen is just about the only televangelist I can stomach.”

Live with it, Ben. :)

He is going to have that on his gravestone you know:

"Jim B could stomach me"

Underneath in small writing:

"Beat that Meyer"

^_^ I expect Joel Osteen could care less what JimB thinks about him. If he read his own tombstone he would say, “JimB who?”
