Would God tell someone to declare bankruptcy?

i had to file bankruptcy in the early 80's, it took me 11 years to pay everyone I owed. I worked one job to live on and one part time job that went exclusively to paying bills. By the time I went to Binle school I was completely debt free.

IMHO if you promise to pay something, you need today it.

Although again I'm not dogmatic about bankruptcy, let me say kudos to you for this, it is a lot of work, it is tireless and it is a road less traveled, so really well done.

I recently had to declare bankruptcy because we lost a sizable monthly income due to changes in state law that caused loss of a second job we were using to try and get out of debt.

Even after bankruptcy, after necessary expenses I am $200 shy per month to be able to pay mandated obamacare insurance for my family. If my wife and I made less money we would actually do better because of food stamps and free medical care for low income workers. Unfortunately we make just a little too much to qualify for this.

I had to decide between what I felt was best for providing for my family and what was best for the creditors.

Once again in life, I am the sinner on the back row with his head in his hands asking God to have mercy on me.

Maybe one day I'll be good like the other Christians here.

The ironic thing is that almost everybody here reading this, most notably those whom it applies to, swear it doesn't apply to them.

All I can say to those who glory in their self-imagined accomplishments is this: No flesh shall glory in His presence. You're just as lowly and wretched a worm as the rest of us "ain'ts." Get over your pompous selves already. "The first shall be last, and the last shall be first. Those that abase themselves shall be exalted, and those that exalt themselves shall be abased."

And before anyone tries to lowbrow their way out of this painful truth, yes — I know myself as the biggest-headed worm of all. The grandest of delusions have been my dwelling place and prison before. I do not exempt myself. And yes, it is good to walk a righteous path through life, but not so that you can boast of it before men. Let your approval come from God alone, and do not boast against your brother for whom Christ also died. Your house in Heaven will be no bigger than his. Let us lift up the life of Christ alone, and keep our righteous deeds for the sake of Christ our secret between us and Christ. Our works which prove our faith will be seen by those whom God delights them to be seen; let God handle that particular oversight. If we go a-boasting to be seen and approved of men, then Scripture tells us we already have our reward.

Man, I get tired of people pointing to themselves rather than to Christ.

The great thing is that you can keep the records of who you owe and when your back on your feet you can make payments to them to reimburse them.

I understand where you're at. It took me years to finely succumb to what I did not want to do but in the end had no other direction to go. Only a few very close friends knew about my filing bankruptcy and I was blessed that they backed up my decision. One of them, an accountant, even paid for it, LOL, I could not even afford to file the papers. I had not been irresponsible with my money. Yes, I depended on cards to pay for things I was responsible to pay for. That was my part in it all. I paid my tithes regularly. I never slacked on them, but my bills were not paid. God blessed in many ways, but it just never got me out from under the oppression of the debtors. I do not feel that I robbed anyone. By that point most of the debt was late fee's and increased interest. The bank got their house back. One does what one has to do. Avoiding it, for me anyway, only compounded the problem. I totally understand.

The American bankruptcy laws are actually based on the biblical model hence the 7 year period after declaring. There are justifiable reasons for doing it, though there are certainly people who used to abuse the system. Since bankruptcy was reformed several years ago it's much harder to abuse the system.

Those would be the first words out of peoples mouths when I would tell anyone what was going on. "Are you tithing?" Yes, I'm tithing, I've been tithing for years. Their response, "gosh, I don't know what to tell you". It's humiliating needing to ask for help then I get that kind of response. Once I got help paying the electric bill but then they wanted to sit down with me and council me about my spending habits. As if all I did with my money was fritter it away.

I understand, there are people who do fritter it away. I know people on welfare who are getting free food, free rent, free toys for their kids at Christmas, etc., and the money they earn here and there they are buying expensive games for their computer, fancy cell phones (although they may get that free too), and they don't even try to keep the good job they had but were too lazy to get up and go to. I did not expect handouts but I also did not expect the first question out of peoples mouths to be "do you pay tithe?"

I don't think bankruptcy is God's best, however, I also don't believe we are condemned for using it. It's there to help, just like the food banks, and other community resources are there to help for those who are truly in need. Not for those who just want to take advantage of the system. Sadly, there are too many who do that.

If someone were over their heads financially, would a direction given in prayer be to file for bankruptcy?

If the person were bankrupt I don't see filing for bankruptcy as wrong?

The problem might be if someone who wasn't genuinely bankrupt misused it.
