  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Would appreciate your thoughts!

So...

I'm starting a nutrition and wellness blog, and I'm wondering what topics interest people. If you'd please share with me your questions, concerns, even gripes regarding foods, nutrition in general, specific health concerns or anything else regarding health, if I address that in the blog I'll also print it here so you can read it. If you prefer to pm me rather than post here that works, too. My creds are that I'm AFPA (American Fitness Professionals and Associates) certified in Nutrition and Wellness, I'm also certified in herbology, am a Master Gardener specializing in organic growing, and have studied and lived this subject matter for more than two decades. However, if you have questions outside these particular topics, I'd still like to hear them because I'm happy to research new topics.

Thanks so much!

good for you miss-a for getting into that stuff.

Personally, its not been much of an interest of mine even tho I spent much of my life growing up on a farm. I still eat much today as I did on the farm, cooking pretty healthy meals. But organic hasn't been an interest of mine. I'll buy organic or not depending on what I grab at the store.

I guess the newest things I've changed food wise, is I used to buy mostly canned vegetables, but lately have been buying more raw veges and cooking them.

I have a lot of friends who are sensitive what they eat and all, so I support them in that, but have no desire to go thru all they go thru to eat that way.

So no questions just my comments on how I eat. Which is probably better than most single guys. Your welcome to comment.

I cut all carbs, sugars, starches. Med tests never looked better.

Just make sure that you are getting enough carbs. The only waythe brain can get energy, from glucose,is from the blood. If the blood sugar gets too high, that is dangerous. However,if the blood sugar gets too low, that is dangerous, also.

blood sugar elevation shouldn't be an issue in someone's whose pancreas is working correctly...you eat too much sugar, the body then releases insulin and the sugar is moved out of the blood stream....

And,insulin is also a fat producing hormone. Even though a non-diabetic's blood sugar will not rise, due to increased insulin, one risks the chance of one's body having more fat.

Thanks for the book blessings, Praize!

Smoothies are good for you if you use the right ingredients and bad for you if they are loaded with refined sugars and use milk from cows given BGH, bovine growth hormone. Better milk referred to in the excerpt I'm printing below refers to milk that states it is free of BGH, organic cow's milk, goat's milk, or organic unsweetened soymilk. Better eggs are cage free, organic, omega-3 eggs, or eggs that have the certified humane seal. Straight from the book:

SUPER SMOOTHIES

Prep Time: 5-8 minutes
Ready in: 5-8 minutes

Smoothies are easy, tasty and packed with goodness. A basic smoothie contains:

A protein source
: better milk, better protein powder, nuts, eggs

Fruit
: bananas, oranges, organic berries or melons

Green: vegetable or powdered greens

Liquid: better milk or filtered water

Healthful sweetener[/B]: raw honey, agave syrup or stevia. These are optional. Sometimes the fruit produces enough sweetness.

Pinch of better salt, optional, however it does enhance flavors and aid in hydration

So get creative. Refer to the Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen list in the Organics section and enjoy the possibilities and convenience of a meal in a glass. Here are some ideas to get you started:

#1
1 ripe Haas avocado
1-2 tablespoons raw honey
pinch better salt
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons carob powder
4 better eggs, lightly pan scrambled, see directions in Egg Salad in the Sandwiches section
2 handfuls organic baby spinach
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1½ cups filtered water

Wash avocados.

Slice avocado in half lengthwise by inserting your knife until you feel the pit and turning the avocado so that you continue the cut all the way around.

Open your avocado by gripping one hand on each side of the cut. Twist each hand in opposite directions, and they’ll twist right apart.

Scoop the flesh of all your avocado into your blender, add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth. Makes two servings.

#2
1 banana
½ cup frozen blueberries
2 large handfuls organic mixed salad greens or 1 tablespoon powdered greens
1 cup better milk
2 rounded tablespoons better protein powder
1-2 teaspoons raw honey, optional
Pinch better salt
1 cup filtered water

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.

#3
1/2 cup Mashed Sweet Potatoes, found in the Veggies Section
1 ½ cups better milk
Pinch better salt
½ cup frozen cranberries
2 large handfuls organic mixed salad greens or 1 tablespoon powdered greens
1 small banana
1-2 teaspoons raw honey

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.

#4
¾ cup cubed watermelon
1 banana
2 tablespoons almond butter or ¼ cup almonds
Pinch of better salt
2 cups filtered water
2 large handfuls of organic spinach
2 rounded tablespoons better protein powder

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.

Yes, there is such a thing as true organics. The best way to be sure you're getting the real thing is to look for the "certified organic" emblem on your products. Technically anything that is derived from the earth can be labeled natural or organic, but that includes nuclear waste, which I personally like to stay away from. The certification symbol on your products shows that a third party oversaw quality control to ensure that the food was produced by true organic, pesticide/aritificial additive-free standards.

I cut all carbs, sugars, starches. Med tests never looked better.

I realize carbs is a controversial subject. Having said that, let the controvery begin.

There are good carbs and bad carbs. Good carbs are from whole foods: fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, nuts. Bad carbs are from processed food, which technically barely fit the definition of food after processing: refined sugars, white flour products, white rice and various stripped starches, such as corn starch.

Bad carbs confuse our bodies because they go into our stomachs like food, but really aren't food. They have very little if any fiber and nutrition and pass into the bloodstream too quickly, setting off alarms everywhere. Insulin goes on high-alert, too much blood sugar causes too much insulin and inflammation which causes all manner of disease, including heart disease, arthritis, immune dysfunction, adrenal stress, and the list goes on. Bad carbs are bad, totally unnecessary to health and detract from health.

Good carbs, on the other hand are useful. When consumed properly, and not in excess complex carbs encourage health. IMO, and the opinion of numerous health experts I study, we need some complex carbs. They provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and, well, carbs. We need some carbs to produce serotonin. And they are the body's preferred source of energy. The body will use proteins and fats for that energy if it has to, but that comes with it's own set of problems, mainly the consumption of too much protein, which is hard on the kidneys in the long term. The solution is to consume some complex carbs, a cup of brown rice with your meats and greens, and cut back some on meat portions. A piece of whole grain toast with some hummus here or there. A nice sweet potato. They'll fill you up, give you energy, tone your digestive tract, and give your kidneys a rest.

Good carbs are indeed good, but like anything can be overdone. But a few servings a day, say two to four goes a long way. And for those worried about weight gain, complex carbs are not the carbs that cause that. As a matter of fact, I just finished my CEUs on Weight Management. The recommendation for those wanting to lose weight was to have 55-60 percent of calories come from complex carbs because they are filling and nutrient dense, and they help fight insulin resistance by keeping blood sugar levels stable.

Insulin does not produce fat...fat comes from an excess of sugar in the blood stream. If your body doesn't need the energy from the excessive sugar, then the insulin turns it into fat which is simply a way of storing energy. I guess in that way, it "produces" fat but it is simply one way the body deals with excess sugar consumption. Excess insulin with no sugar does not cause fat to be produced. Insulin is a good guy.

I did not mean to say that insulin is the only way that the body deals with excess sugar consumption. These are your words ," If your body doesn't need the energy from the excessive sugar, then the insulin turns it into fat which is simply a way of storing energy. I guess in that way, it "produces" fat but it is simply one way the body deals with excess sugar consumption. "

Therefore logic dictates that high insulin production is one of the factors why people get fat by eating too much sugar. Therefore,we are both saying the same thing"

I have a college degree, which consisted of glucose biochemistry, also. Why must you make it seem as if I am some kind of "village idiot",that tells lies and do not know what he is talking about? Who voted you into the office of being my antagonist?

Now,I do not mind being corrected if I am proved wrong. But, I just hate the fact that some people do not believe me when I am telling the truth. Maybe some women "get off" on aggravating me,just to get an emotional response from me,by insulting my intelligence.

I did not intend to insult you but I believed your choice of words could confuse someone less educated about diabetes, insulin, and blood sugars. There are so many incorrect ideas out there.

Ok,then no offense is taken. Yes,there are a lot of incorrect ideas about blood sugars, insulin, and diabetes. My mother, who also had diabetes, believed the myth htat eating too much sugar causes one to get type 2 diabetes. Obesity can cause one to become insulin resistant, thus causing diabetes.
