One example is the website Behindthebadge.net.

The administrator repeatedly contradicts himself (notably on faith vs. works), denies the reality of mental illness and psychology (calling it all "secular" and "worldly" and things like that), and victim-blames suicidal people (even Christians).

And while he does have a few positive testimonials to show for his work, the vast majority of his website consists of arguing and browbeating.

How is anyone supposed to feel at peace with God after reading all that?

I hope he learns to change his approach.

Have you ever visited 'JesusisSavior'? It's an IFB website affiliated with the Jack Hyles ministries. It has an insane amount of links to fringe conspiracy theorists, and the derogatory pages about women make me feel sad and angry for any woman caught in a church like that. Also, I don't know if you've ever encountered Dan Corner (Evangelical Outreach), his page is almost as bad, which is kind of humorous because JesusisSavior slams Dan Corner for his teachings, then turns around and preaches close to the same stuff.

It's no wonder people hate Christianity......look at the examples they see.

Exactly! I've been thinking about this a lot for a long time, and I've been really troubled by it. I'm taking it as a sign of God comforting me and trying to draw me back to peace and hope that I found this thread.

I think among the worst examples of this are people victim-blaming those who were hurt by those in the church (especially kids, and women), and trying to sweep all the wrongs of "insiders" under the rug. A LOT of people get defensive and angry when anyone talks about the crimes of church leaders. (And for the record, no, I'm not just talking about Catholic leaders, though obviously...that's one for the books. But I used to be nondenominational, and I saw plenty in those circles, too, sadly.)

They seem to think it's worse to expose the sins than to commit them, and those who expose them to "outsiders" are especially punished, ostracized, etc. They're more concerned about protecting the church's reputation than about the real, suffering victims who have to live with trauma. Many are even psychologically abusive to them.

Their behavior is not at all a reflection of God - more like the devil - so I'm not tempted to leave myself (at least, not anymore, because Jesus has revealed enough of His Heart to make me stay), but I really empathize with those who do. By empathize, I mean that I'm not angry at them for taking such a path in their turmoil - I think this kind of anger takes judgmentalism to a whole new level. No, my heart breaks for these people who should have found a sanctuary in church in their suffering, and found themselves condemned for exposing injustice, and for being the victims of abuse.

I also feel like I should do something about all this, but I really have no idea what. As a student, I'm surrounded by atheists eager to expose crimes of church "insiders," but for all the wrong reasons. I don't feel I should work with them, but on the other hand, there doesn't seem to be any "inside" option for this kind of thing, either. Not a viable option that truly has justice as its goal.

I would suggest that you go back if you haven't already and study the New Testament as much as possible. I'm currently doing this after coming out of a church that all though wasn't legalistic, was lukewarm. My eyes are really being opened to the heart of who God really is and I'm thankful He has placed me in a church where I've been growing even in only two weeks of being there. As you study, emulate the love that Jesus shows. Trust Him to work through you, and I guarantee the more truth you discover, the more you'll want to trust Him to do this. I don't know what you're going to school for, but have you ever thought of maybe going and becoming a counselor?

it has been done for ever ----people using a good name or reputation.

some atheist understand this as well- and they argues with a semblance of intellectual honesty--many others that don't won't be convinced of their eternal damnation even if Christ told them Himself.

I always tell an atheist that Christianity is about Jesus Christ as explained in the bible---there are no Christian police, or a test to weed out evil that cloaks themselves with christian symbols and words---that will be done on judgement day.

Are you sure that's a legit/real group? I've often thought that perhaps that site was run by people trying to mock Christianity by pretending to be the biggest Evangelical caricature out there.

Dan Corner (Evangelical Outreach)

Behindthebadge.net even has links to some of Corner's works.

Which explains a lot, if you ask me.

P.S.: I don't wish any ill will toward those people; I just wish they'd change their ways.
